he concept of ranked order probability distribution unveils natural probabilistic interpretations for the kink waves (and hence the solitons) solving higher order dispersive Burgers’ type PDEs. Thanks to this underlying structure, it is possible to propose ...

Using the Lambert function, Guittienne et al. [Phys. Plasmas 25, 093519 (2018)] derived two-fluid solutions for radial Langmuir probes in collisionless and isothermal plasma. In this Brief Communication, we point out the close analogy with classical compre ...

The exploration of electronically excited states and the study of diverse photochemical and photophysical processes are the main goals of molecular electronic spectroscopy. Exact quantum-mechanical simulation of such experiments is, however, beyond current ...

The first Panel Element Tester was conceived by Vecchio and Collins at the University of Toronto in the late 1970s. This apparatus allows for the mechanical testing of concrete elements under combined in-plane normal and shear stresses and provided importa ...

Theoretical methods for estimating the bearing capacity of surface strip footings usually do not consider soil-structure interaction. A few publications deal with the subject, but all of these either do not apply rigorous methods or do not consider the gen ...

Underwater manipulation is a challenging problem. The state of the art is dominated by Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV). ROV operations typically require an offshore crew consisting of at least an intendant, an operator, and a navigator. This crew often ha ...

Expectation propagation (EP) is a widely successful algorithm for variational inference. EP is an iterative algorithm used to approximate complicated distributions, typically to find a Gaussian approximation of posterior distributions. In many applications ...

This Review discusses non-invasive and invasive technologies for conveying artificial sensory feedback through bionic hands. ...

Designing new concrete members and assessing the strength of existing elements subjected to in-plane stress state conditions is often conducted by means of Stress Fields (SF) and Strut-and-Tie Models (STM). These methods are usually accounting for identica ...

The deployment of distributed photovoltaics (PV) in low-voltage networks may cause technical issues such as voltage rises, line ampacity violations, and transformer overloading for distribution system operators (DSOs). These problems may induce grid reinfo ...

Short beams are the key building blocks in many compliant mechanisms. Hence, deriving a simple yet accurate model of their elastokinematics is an important issue. Since the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory fails to accurately model these beams, we use the Timos ...

The cavity method is one of the cornerstones of the statistical physics of disordered systems such as spin glasses and other complex systems. It is able to analytically and asymptotically exactly describe the equilibrium properties of a broad range of mode ...

Debris and pyroclastic flows often have bouldery flow fronts, which act as a natural dam resisting further advance. Counter intuitively, these resistive fronts can lead to enhanced run-out, because they can be shouldered aside to form static levees that se ...

To predict the response of masonry buildings to various types of loads, engineers use finite element models, specifically solid-element and macro-element models. For predicting masonry responses to seismic events in particular, equivalent frame models-a su ...

Most microorganisms live in environments where nutrients are limited and fluctuate over time. Cells respond to nutrient fluctuations by sensing and adapting their physiological state. Recent studies suggest phenotypic heterogeneity(1) in isogenic populatio ...

A long-standing goal of science is to accurately simulate large molecular systems using quantum mechanics. The poor scaling of current quantum chemistry algorithms on classical computers, however, imposes an effective limit of about a few dozen atoms on tr ...

We present a method for estimating the main properties of human skin, leveraging a hyperspectral dataset of skin tones synthetically generated through a biophysical layered skin model and Monte Carlo light transport simulations. Our approach learns the map ...

Stress fields and strut-and-tie models are widely used for design and assessment of structural concrete members. Although they are often used in the same manner for both purposes, developing suitable stress fields and strut-and-tie models for the design of ...

This work is devoted to an adaptive multiscale finite element method (MsFEM) for solving elliptic problems with rapidly oscillating coefficients. Starting from a general version of the MsFEM with oversampling, we derive an a posteriori estimate for the H-1 ...

This work focuses on the development of a new family of decision-making algorithms for adaptation and learning, which are specifically tailored to decision problems and are constructed by building up on first principles from decision theory. A key observat ...
