This paper presents the historical development of the vertical extensions of unreinforced masonry buildings in the Eixample district of Barcelona and their impact on the seismic behaviour. Existing masonry buildings of Eixample present significant seismic ...

Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a plant pathogen commonly repurposed for genetic modification of crops. Despite its versatility, it remains inefficient at transferring DNA to many hosts, including to animal cells. Like many pathogens, physical contact between ...

This paper is concerned with the initial-boundary value problems of scalar transport equations with uncertain transport velocities. It was demonstrated in our earlier works that regularity of the exact solutions in the random spaces (or the parametric spac ...

Spectral-based graph neural networks (SGNNs) have been attracting increasing attention in graph representation learning. However, existing SGNNs are limited in implementing graph filters with rigid transforms and cannot adapt to signals residing on graphs ...

Many details about the flow of water in soils in a hillslope are unknowable given current technologies. One way of learning about the bulk effects of water velocity distributions on hillslopes is through the use of tracers. However, this paper will demonst ...

Beta-dicalcium silicate (beta-C2S), one of the main phases in Portland cement clinker, offers some promising overviews regarding CO2 and energy savings potential compared to alite. Understanding the crystalline structure and reactive sites on beta-C2S surf ...

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the second most abundant identified product of dissolved organic matter (DOM) photodegradation after CO2, but its formation mechanism remains unknown. Previous work showed that aqueous photodegradation of methoxy-substituted aromati ...

In this paper, we discuss two issues related to the measurement and calculation of the horizontal electric fields from lightning. On the one hand, there is an inherent difficulty inmeasuring the horizontal electric field component from lightning because of ...

This paper contains an investigation on the potential decrease of seismic vulnerability related to building replacements for the cities of Sion and Martigny in Switzerland. Those two cities were identified for the present research based on the accuracy of ...

A general continuum theory for particle size segregation and diffusive remixing in polydisperse granular avalanches is formulated using mixture theory. Comparisons are drawn to existing segregation theories for bi-disperse mixtures and the case of a ternar ...

An oblivious linear function evaluation protocol, or OLE, is a two-party protocol for the function f (x) = ax + b, where a sender inputs the field elements a, b, and a receiver inputs x and learns f (x). OLE can be used to build secret-shared multiplicatio ...

Ecohydrological footprints are defined as the response of ecosystem functions or services to changes in their hydrologic drivers. In this thesis, several diverse footprints are addressed: noise-driven effects on storage-discharge relations and catchment st ...

In the analysis and control of discrete-time linear time-invariant systems, the spectral radius of the system state matrix plays an essential role. Usually, it is assumed that system matrices are known, from which the spectral radius can be directly comput ...

Hairsine and Rose developed a mechanistic, one-dimensional, precipitation-driven erosion model that, since its appearance, has been validated by several sets of experimental results. The model allows any sediment particle to be present in one of three zone ...

To achieve interoperability between unconnected ledgers, hash time lock contracts (HTLCs) are commonly used for cross-chain asset exchange. The solution tolerates transaction failure, and can "make the best out of worst" by allowing transacting agents to a ...

Laboratory column experiments involving steady flow in homogeneous soil are often analyzed assuming that the flow is spatially uniform in any plane transverse to the longitudinal axis aligned with the column centerline. Axisymmetric steady flow in such a c ...

In this work we propose and experimentally validate a relaxation spiking oscillator architecture with ultra-high tuning range (higher than 400%, from 5KHz to more than 25kHz when the control voltage is varied from 2.5 to 5V) that exploits the reversible me ...

Dynamic mesh adaptation on unstructured grids, by localised refinement and derefinement, is a very efficient tool for enhancing solution accuracy and optimise computational time. One of the major drawbacks however resides in the projection of the new nodes ...

It has long been acknowledged that the well known and frequently used stability criterion beta(p)< 0.3 for the toroidal ideal magnetohydrodynamic internal kink mode in a tokamak is inaccurate for an empirically relevant safety factor. The present paper out ...

Failure detectors (FD)s are celebrated for their modularity in solving distributed problems. Algorithms are constructed using FD building blocks. Synchrony assumptions to implement FDs are studied separately and are typically expressed as eventual guarante ...
