We develop a model-free approach to optimally control stochastic, Markovian systems subject to a reach-avoid constraint. Specifically, the state trajectory must remain within a safe set while reaching a target set within a finite time horizon. Due to the t ...

The application of kernel-based Machine Learning (ML) techniques to discrete choice modelling using large datasets often faces challenges due to memory requirements and the considerable number of parameters involved in these models. This complexity hampers ...

The analysis of the acceleration behavior of gradient-based eigensolvers with preconditioning presents a substantial theoretical challenge. In this work, we present a novel framework for preconditioning on Riemannian manifolds and introduce a metric, the l ...

Semi-discrete optimal transport problems, which evaluate the Wasserstein distance between a discrete and a generic (possibly non-discrete) probability measure, are believed to be computationally hard. Even though such problems are ubiquitous in statistics, ...

This thesis presents advancements in the understanding of the plasma conditions leading to the excitation and saturation of the Edge Harmonic Oscillations (EHOs) observed during QH-mode operation in tokamak plasmas. Such operations represent a safer altern ...

Trajectory planning through dynamical systems (DS) provides robust control for robots and has found numerous applications from locomotion to manipulation. However, to date, DS for controlling rhythmic patterns are distinct from DS used to control point to ...

Consider a linear elliptic PDE defined over a stochastic stochastic geometry a function of N random variables. In many application, quantify the uncertainty propagated to a quantity of interest (QoI) is an important problem. The random domain is split into ...

Eigendecomposition of symmetric matrices is at the heart of many computer vision algorithms. However, the derivatives of the eigenvectors tend to be numerically unstable, whether using the SVD to compute them analytically or using the Power Iteration (PI) ...

This thesis is devoted to the derivation of a posteriori error estimates for the numerical approximation of fluids flows separated by a free surface. Based on these estimates, error indicators are introduced and adaptive algorithms are proposed to solve th ...

An alternative approach for real-time network-wide traffic control in cities that has recently gained a lot of interest is perimeter flow control. The basic concept of such an approach is to partition heterogeneous cities into a small number of homogeneous ...

We study a generalization of the classical stable matching problem that allows for cardinal preferences (as opposed to ordinal) and fractional matchings (as opposed to integral). After observing that, in this cardinal setting, stable fractional matchings c ...

The large potential for waste resource and heat recovery in industry has been motivating research toward increasing efficiency. Process integration methods have proven to be effective tools in improving industrial sites while decreasing their resource and ...

In this paper, we propose a re-dispatch scheme for radial distribution grids hosting stochastic Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and controllable batteries. At each re-dispatch round, the proposed scheme computes a new dispatch plan that modifies and ex ...

The extensive use of frequency-domain tools for analyzing and controlling linear systems have become indispensable for the control systems engineer. However, due to the increased performance demands on today's industrial systems, the effects of certain non ...

Transitional turbulence in shear flows is supported by a network of unstable exact invariant solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. The network is interconnected by heteroclinic connections along which the turbulent trajectories evolve between invariant ...

We use the adjoint method to compute sensitivity maps for the limit-cycle frequency and amplitude of the Benard von Karmzin vortex street in the wake of a circular cylinder. rfhe sensitivity, analysis is performed in the frame of the semi-linear self consi ...

Modulation instability (MI) as the main limit to the sensing distance of distributed fiber sensors is thoroughly investigated in this thesis in order to obtain a model for predicting its characteristics and alleviating its effects. Starting from Maxwell's ...

Metallic nanostructures interact in complex ways with light, forming the subject of plasmonics and bringing novel physical phenomena and practical applications. The fundamental and practical importance of plasmonics necessitates the development of a multit ...

The focus of this thesis is on developing efficient algorithms for two important problems arising in model reduction, estimation of the smallest eigenvalue for a parameter-dependent Hermitian matrix and solving large-scale linear matrix equations, by extra ...

We consider the Cauchy problem for an energy supercritical nonlinear wave equation that arises in -dimensional Yang-Mills theory. A certain self-similar solution of this model is conjectured to act as an attractor for generic large data evolutions. Assumin ...
