Plasmas with negative triangularity (NT) shape have been recently shown to be able to achieve H-mode levels of confinement in L-mode, avoiding detrimental edge localised modes. Therefore, this plasma geometry is now studied as a possible viable option for ...

FLASH radiotherapy (FLASH-RT) is an innovation in cancer therapy characterized by ultra-high radiation doses within a tenth of a second. This method is promising because it reduces the side effects of radiotherapy by sparing healthy tissue while effectivel ...

We compute three-term semiclassical asymptotic expansions of counting functions and Riesz-means of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on spheres and hemispheres, for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Specifically for Riesz-means we prove upper ...

Improper use of chemical fertilizers has led to land degradation. Organic crops, which are farmed using organic fertilizers to reduce the negative environmental effects, are considered an alternative solution to develop the ecosystem health and improve the ...

Multi-dimensional fuel performance codes have the potential to enhance the understanding of complex phenomena affecting fuel integrity, but their application is often limited by the high computational cost. Recognizing that many multi-dimensional aspects s ...

As the international mobility of academic scientists is ever increasing, its effects on outcomes beyond research productivity deserve more attention. In this paper, we therefore investigate to what extent academics with different international mobility exp ...

The perception, physiology, behavior, and performance of building occupants are influenced by multi-domain exposures: the simultaneous presence of multiple environmental stimuli, i.e., visual, thermal, acoustic, and air quality. Despite being extensive, th ...

With the dissolution of the agricultural projects that the Rockefeller Foundation (RF) was leading in China in 1940, it is in Mexico that a new testing ground for development programs based on the dissemination of new agronomic knowledge opens up. Science ...

This paper introduces the notion of "Initial Alignment" (INAL) between a neural network at initialization and a target function. It is proved that if a network and a Boolean target function do not have a noticeable INAL, then noisy gradient descent on a fu ...

Among the policies to reduce the consequences of GHG emissions, the decarbonization of the electrical, transport, and manufacturing sectors has profoundly changed how the electricity is produced, transmitted, distributed, and consumed, particularly imposin ...

We provide a counterexample to the performance guarantee obtained in the paper "Il'ev, V., Linker, N., 2006. Performance guarantees of a greedy algorithm for minimizing a supermodular set function on comatroid", which was published in Volume 171 of the Eur ...

Quasi-static piezoelectric actuators are used in micro-robotics due to the small displacements they can achieve, and they have been proven to be suitable for Self-Sensing Actuation (SSA) applications. The morphology and material of an actuator, and therefo ...

Urbanization and climate change induce many challenges for todayâ s cities. These challenges have to be faced by urban planners during complex planning processes that involve many stakeholders. Interactive computational approaches can provide assistance d ...

Technology transfer processes enable universities to increase their positive impact on society by pursuing their entrepreneurial mission in several ways. By analyzing quantitative and qualitative data collected in a longitudinal dataset of 60 U.S. universi ...

Multistable Mechanisms are mechanical devices having more than one stable state. Since these mechanisms can maintain different deformations with zero force, they are advantageous for low power environments such as wristwatches and medical devices. In this ...

This contribution puts the spotlight on participation of heterogeneous actors and diverse forms of expertise in knowledge production and its implications for governance of complex problems. With regard to tackling complex ‘global’ problems, multifaceted de ...

We performed dynamic force spectroscopy of single dextran and titin 127 molecules using small-amplitude and low-frequency (40-240 Hz) dithering of an atomic force microscope tip excited by a sine wave voltage fed onto the tip-carrying piezo. We show that f ...

The interfaces of neat water and aqueous solutions play a prominent role in many technological processes and in the environment. Examples of aqueous interfaces are ultrathin water films that cover most hydrophilic surfaces under ambient relative humidities ...

The consequence of linguistic digital exclusion is the inability of billions of people to access vital knowledge and economic resources that contribute to prosperity in an era of globalization. However, rectifying linguistic inequity is mostly absent from ...
