In a previous study, it was shown that the incorporation of calcium aluminates-based accelerators is an effective solution to improve the early age strength of LC3. The higher early age strength was linked to the ettringite formation during the first hours of hydration [1]. Late age strength results (up to 1 year) of LC3 incorporating calcium aluminates-based accelerators were higher than PC and LC3. This study focuses on understanding the late age strength of LC3 boosted with calcium aluminates-based accel

Natural biocomposites such as wood and plant cell walls exhibit prominent mechanical properties largely attributed to the nanoscale organization of fibrous components, such as cellulose, which often adopt chiral arrangements. However, resolving the three-dimensional (3D) arrangement of these structures at the nanoscale remains a significant challenge, particularly in beam-sensitive materials. This study introduces a method for 3D reconstruction of orientation based on scanning electron diffraction (SED), en

Since their discovery, scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques have been extensively employed across diverse research fields for nanoscale characterization and analysis. While their ex-situ combination has been widely used, the in-situ integration of the two techniques has gained significant traction in recent years. This review highlights the journey of bringing the complementary capabilities of these two instruments into a single platform, with the focus on extrac

From their discovery, CNTs have increasingly attracted interest because of their peculiar electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties. In 1991, Sumio Iijima first observed and described in detail the atomic arrangement of this new type of carbon structure [1]. By a technique used for fullerene synthesis, he produced needle-like tubes at the cathode of an arc-discharge evaporator. From that time, carbon nanotubes have been used for many applications and represent one of the most typical building blocks u

The motivation of this work derives from the need of the cutting tool industry to improve its products in order to support harder and harder working conditions, namely increasing cutting speeds and working on stronger modern materials. The lifetime of the tools is limited by plastic deformation that occurs at the cutting edge under working conditions, which involve high temperatures and stresses. The high temperature deformation of the materials that are used for the production of cutting tools is studied.

Uniaxial fragmentation tests were carried out in situ in a scanning electron microscope (SEM) on 10-nm-thick silicon oxide coatings deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition on poly(ethylene terephthalate). In order to prevent charging effects due to the isolating nature of the oxide surface, an additional conductive gold layer was sputtered onto the coating prior to its tensile loading in the SEM chamber. The gold layer was shown not to affect initiation of tensile failure of the oxide coating

Relaxor Pb(Sc1/2Nb1/2)O-3 (PSN) thin films without pyrochlore phase were processed from the modified alkoxide solution precursors. The preparation of single phase PSN thin films has a narrow processing window due to the appearance of an undesirable pyrochlore phase and volatility of PbO. Thin film processing has been improved through selection of precursor solutions, heat treatment and optimized deposition-condition are optimized. Especially, the effects of Pt substrates seeded with additional layers upper

Nickel-aluminium intermetallics constitute interesting systems for the study of irradiation-induced phase transformations (order → disorder, amorphization) and production of defects. Irradiation of ordered intermetallics may induce disorder or amorphization depending on the projectile characteristics, irradiation conditions and chemical and physical properties of the target. The behavior of the various intermetallic compounds of the nickel-aluminium system with respect to electron and ion irradiation has be

The differences and similarities of behaviour between fee and bcc metals after irradiation have been investigated. For this purpose, fee Cu, Pd and 304 stainless steel and bcc Fe, Mo and Mo-5% Re were irradiated with either neutrons or 590 MeV protons at temperatures below recovery stage V. It is shown that a dense population of defect clusters (up to 10(22)-10(24) m(-3)) develops, the type of cluster formed depending apparently on the stacking fault energy. In the case of stacking fault tetrahedra formed i

Electrode stability, interdiffusion, phase purity and deviation from stoichiometry at the PZT-electrode interface are key issues in PZT thin film integration. This article highlights the use of transmission electron imaging combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) for the investigation of these phenomena. The accuracy of the EDS analysis is discussed. It will be shown that using a standard PZT sample and controlled conditions, reliable analysis can be performed. Diffusion mechanisms have been stud

We have evaluated the structure of high-reflectivity InP/InGaAsP distributed Bragg reflectors grown by chemical-beam epitaxy at a growth rate of 3 mu m/h. Transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy indicate lateral fluctuations in the GaInAsP alloy composition, clearly visible in the 490-510 degrees C growth temperature range, but less perceptible between 460 and 480 degrees C. In the higher temperature range, the modulation in composition shows a higher frequency along

Platinum silicide films are widely used in silicon devices for ohmic and Schottky contacts. It has been demonstrated in the recent years that Schottky barriers employing ultra-thin platinum silicide films (thickness < 10 nm) are useful for photodetection in the near infrared. We have studied the formation of thin platinum silicide films and their electrical properties as a function of the annealing temperature in presence of an interfacial native silicon oxide layer and with plasma etching damage on the Si

We present results obtained both with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the cathodoluminescence (CL) mode and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on ZnCdSe/ZnSe electron-beam-pumped laser structures. This investigation aims at establishing a relationship between different parameters measurable in electron microscopy and the lasing activity of the structures.

Physisorbed and covalently bound Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of sulfur-bearing lipids on mica and on gold substrates, resp., have been studied. Scanning force microscopy, in topog. and friction modes as well as in contact and non-contact modes have been used to investigate these films in the region of coexisting phases. For the first time, a detailed and complex internal structure of solid-analogous monolayer domains, reflecting their sym. morphol., has been obsd. Comparisons of physisorbed monolayers

Silver chloride containing fibers, spheres and particles of irregular form is used as a model material to study plasticity in metal matrix composites. Matrix dislocations generated upon cooling by the mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion between the matrix and the reinforcement are observed by transmission optical microscopy after decoration at room temperature by photodissociation of the matrix. The plastic zone around the fibers, spheres and particles takes two forms: (a) trains of coaxial prismat
