Machine learning and artificial intelligence methods have achieved remarkable success, matching and even surpassing human capabilities in various complex tasks. However, many demonstrations have generally neglected a critical part of the intelligence that ...

In this thesis, we mainly utilize silver to construct the meta-atoms. Although suffering from easily oxidized, its excellent lossless property throughout the visible range makes it suitable for study. When preserved properly, silver-made metasurfaces can s ...

Recently, investigation of metasurfaces has been extended to wave control through exploiting nonlinearity. Among all of the ways to achieve tunable metasurfaces with multiplexed performances, nonlinearity is one of the promising choices. Although several p ...

We propose a novel graphene-dielectric-based meta-surface for manipulating the polarization of the incident light in the terahertz regime. The proposed structure comprised two orthogonally oriented periodic array of graphene ribbons (PAGRs) which are separ ...

Deriving the time-dependent expected reward function associated with a continuous-time Markov chain involves the computation of its transient deviation matrix. In this paper we focus on the special case of a finite quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) process, moti ...

Moving towards an increased understanding of the dynamic processes in the edge of tokamak plasmas requires continuous innovation in diagnostic capabilities, pushing the envelope in both spatial and temporal dimenstions. Plasma density and rotation, and the ...

This paper theoretically proposes a multichannel nonlocal metasurface computer characterized by generalized sheet transition conditions (GSTCs) and surface susceptibility tensors. The study explores polarization- and angle-multiplexed metasurfaces enabling ...

We introduce a new metasurface structure for controlling the polarization of light by leveraging a well-harmonized combination of graphene and dielectric. The proposed metasurface is composed of an array of rectangular pillars laterally sandwiched by ribbo ...

Crystalline organic semiconducting materials are much in demand for multiple electronic and optoelectronic device applications. Here, solution grown ultrathin rhombic crystals of a trimethine carbocyanine anionic dye are used to establish relationships bet ...

It is well known that a family of n×n commuting matrices can be simultaneously triangularized by a unitary similarity transformation. The diagonal entries of the triangular matrices define the n joint eigenvalues of the family. In this work, we consider th ...

We present a fundamental improvement of a high polynomial degree time domain cell method recently introduced by the last three authors. The published work introduced a method featuring block-diagonal system matrices where the block size and conditioning sc ...

In the first part of this thesis, we present and compare several approaches for the determination of the steady-state of large-scale Markov chains with an underlying low-rank tensor structure. Such structure is, in our context of interest, associated with ...

The reuse of industrial heritage sites has become increasingly prevalent in the context of hosting mega-events. This paper aims to investigate this trend, specifically in the context of Olympic Games or World Expos, and its impact on urban regeneration str ...

We consider linear programming (LP) problems in infinite dimensional spaces that are in general computationally intractable. Under suitable assumptions, we develop an approximation bridge from the infinite-dimensional LP to tractable finite convex programs ...

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has made unprecedented advances in vision language models over the past two years. These advances are largely due to diffusion-based generative models, which are very stable and simple to train. These diffusion model ...

We propose a reduced ODE model for the mechanical activation of cardiac myofilaments, which is based on explicit spatial representation of nearest-neighbour interactions. Our model is derived from the cooperative Markov Chain model of Washio et al. (Cell M ...

Given a dataset of expert demonstrations, inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) aims to recover a reward for which the expert is optimal. This work proposes a model-free algorithm to solve the entropy-regularized IRL problem. In particular, we employ a stoc ...

Isolators, or optical diodes, are devices enabling unidirectional light propagation by using non-reciprocal optical materials, namely materials able to break Lorentz reciprocity. The realization of isolators at terahertz frequencies is a very important ope ...

In this work a reduced-order computational framework for the study of haemodynamics in three-dimensional patient-specific configurations of coronary artery bypass grafts dealing with a wide range of scenarios is proposed. We combine several efficient algor ...

In this paper a technique to measure the distributed birefringence profile along optical fibers is proposed and experimentally validated. The method is based on the spectral correlation between two sets of orthogonally-polarized measurements acquired using ...
