We discover alignments of views between interest groups (lobbies) and members of the European Parliament (MEPs) by automatically analyzing their texts. Specifically, we do so by collecting novel datasets of lobbies’ position papers and MEPs’ speeches, and ...

Time series of hydrochemical parameters support the investigation of dominant karst hydrological processes and conceptual model structures. Nevertheless, high costs for sample collection and analyses cause hydrochemical data to be rarely available at a suf ...

Data-driven and model-driven methodologies can be regarded as competitive fields since they tackle similar problems such as prediction. However, these two fields can learn from each other to improve themselves. Indeed, data-driven methodologies have been d ...

The substitution of portland clinker by supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) is one of the main avenues for the further decarbonization of cement production. To secure future SCM supplies, generic and performance-related test methods for SCMs are re ...

How can we discern whether the covariance operator of a stochastic pro-cess is of reduced rank, and if so, what its precise rank is? And how can we do so at a given level of confidence? This question is central to a great deal of methods for functional dat ...

We consider a setup in which confidential i.i.d. samples X1, . . . , Xn from an unknown finite-support distribution p are passed through n copies of a discrete privatization chan- nel (a.k.a. mechanism) producing outputs Y1, . . . , Yn. The channel law gua ...

This paper reports an algorithm to automatically identify the chain of events leading to a disruption, evaluating the so-called reference warning time. This time separates the plasma current flat-top of each disrupted discharge into two parts: a non-disrup ...

Testing mutual independence among several random vectors of arbitrary dimensions is a challenging problem in Statistics, and it has gained considerable interest in recent years. In this article, we propose some nonparametric tests based on different notion ...

Testing for equality of two high-dimensional distributions is a challenging problem, and this becomes even more challenging when the sample size is small. Over the last few decades, several graph-based two-sample tests have been proposed in the literature, ...

Motivation: Unbiased clustering methods are needed to analyze growing numbers of complex data sets. Currently available clustering methods often depend on parameters that are set by the user, they lack stability, and are not applicable to small data sets. ...

An insulator differs from a metal because of a different organization of the electrons in their ground state. In recent years this feature has been probed by means of a geometrical property, the quantum metric tensor, which addresses the system as a whole, ...

OBJECTIVE Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder. Drug-resistant ET can benefit from standard stereotactic deep brain stimulation or radiofrequency thalamotomy or, alternatively, minimally invasive techniques, including stereotactic rad ...

In this thesis, we deal with one of the facets of the statistical detection problem. We study a particular type of alternative, the mixture model. We consider testing where the null hypothesis corresponds to the absence of a signal, represented by some kno ...

The work presented in this dissertation lies in the domains of image classification, object detection, and machine learning. Whether it is training image classifiers or object detectors, the learning phase consists in finding an optimal boundary between po ...

We consider the problem of estimating the underlying graph associated with a Markov random field, with the added twist that the decoding algorithm can iteratively choose which subsets of nodes to sample based on the previous samples, resulting in an active ...

Parkinson's disease biomarkers are needed to increase diagnostic accuracy, to objectively monitor disease progression and to assess therapeutic efficacy as well as target engagement when evaluating novel drug and therapeutic strategies. This article summar ...

The composition and properties of atmospheric organic aerosols (OAs) change on timescales of minutes to hours. However, some important OA characterization techniques typically require greater than a few hours of sample-collection time (e.g., Fourier transf ...

We consider a setup in which confidential i.i.d. samples X1, ..., Xn from an unknown discrete distribution PX are passed through a discrete memoryless privatization channel (a.k.a. mechanism) which guarantees an epsilon-level of local differential privacy. ...

Coverage criteria aim at satisfying test requirements and compute metrics values that quantify the adequacy of test suites at revealing defects in programs. Typically, a test requirement is a structural program element, and the coverage metric value repres ...

This dissertation explores techniques that synthesize and generate program fragments and test inputs. The main goal of these techniques is to improve and support automation in program synthesis and test input generation. This is important because performin ...
