Dwindling fossil resources and their associated environmental concerns have increased interest in biobased products. In particular, many approaches to convert lignocellulosic biomass into small-molecule building blocks are being explored via thermal, chemi ...

We introduce a droplet-digital microfluidic recovery system to collect single cells from pooled culture and transfer these droplets into a well-plate. The platform is shown for the recovery of single beads and rare antibody secreting cells. ...

A promising modality of radiation therapy is FLASH: a technique in which the full radiation dose is delivered in just 1/10th of a second. This modality has been proven successful in destroying cancerous cells while sparing healthy tissues. The aim is to de ...

Understanding and manipulating emergent phases, which are themes at the forefront of quantummaterials research, rely on identifying their underlying symmetries. This general principle has been particularly prominent in materials with coupled electronic and ...

This article presents the development and validation of a three-dimensional force and torque semi-analytical model for ironless permanent magnet structures. This method relies on the definition of the magnetic flux density generated by permanent magnets in ...

The new class of fully silicon-compatible hafnia-based ferroelectrics with high switchable polarization and good endurance and thickness scalability shows a strong promise for new generations of logic and memory devices. Among other factors, their competit ...

We investigate the magnetic order in single crystalline EuCd2Sb2 thin films using a combined theoretical and experimental approach. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering experiments reveal a sharp magnetic peak at q=(0,0,12) below TN=7.2 K, indicative of inter ...

A method for contactlessly determining an exact passage of an athlete at points placed along a track in sports, wherein the method comprises gearing the athlete with a wearable magnetometer sensor unit, whereby the magnetometer sensor unit is equipped with ...

The ionization of the residual gas in gyrotrons causes the generation of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons. Using the electron optics code Ariadne, it was possible to simulate the behavior of these electrons in the overall gyrotron g ...

In the age of smart systems, artificial intelligence, and personalized devices, the need for effective methods to facilitate multifunctionality integration has become a necessity. One of the fields that boosts the efforts of multifunctionality integration ...

A magnetic microparticle-based bioassay requires the separation of the microparticles from the sample matrix, after the microparticles have specifically captured the target of interest. For the implementation of such an assay in water-in-oil droplet segmen ...

The extraordinary properties of the Kitaev model have motivated an intense search for new physics in materials that combine geometrical and bond frustration. In this Letter, we employ inelastic neutron scattering, spin wave theory, and exact diagonalizatio ...

This thesis investigates the magnetic properties of single atoms and molecules adsorbed on thin magnesium oxide decoupling layers, grown on a silver single crystal. To address these systems experimentally, we use a low temperature scanning tunneling micros ...

In order to mimic the complex architecture of many bio-materials and synthesize composites characterized by continuously graded composition and mechanical properties, an innovative synthetic strategy making use of magnetic field gradients and based on the ...

Magnetic manipulation of objects within the body is a growing field of research since the second half of the last century. Therapeutic and diagnostic capabilities offered by such technology are extended with the clinical need to make procedures less invasi ...

Permanent magnet axial flux motors are very well adapted to applications requiring a very short active length and a big diameter. They also have been used for micro-motors. Because of their size, these motors require the use of a permanent magnet and their ...

("Re" stands for the rare-earth element) and their doped derivatives have long been recognized as a family of compounds that exhibit rich phenomena in quantum magnetism, drawing wide attention to them from both fundamental researchers and industr ...

A large-aperture and large-angle MEMS-based 2D pointing mirror is presented. The device is electromagnetically actuated by a moving-magnet/stationary-coil pair and potentially suited for high power laser beam shaping and beam pointing applications, such as ...

Thermoset rubbers give rise to elastomers with tunable stiffness and high resilience but are not recyclable. Thermoplastic elastomers can address this problem but their broad applicability is impeded by either limited operating temperatures or inferior ela ...

In this thesis, we present development of the first magnetic model of the main Proton Synchrotron magnets. The operation of the machine and conducting research on increasing its performance require a significant amount of the magnetic field data for the op ...
