the last years, increasing interest has been addressed on wearable devices for the continuous monitoring of biochemical profiles of patients and athletes. Among various markers, lactate represents one of the most interesting to deepen the knowledge on fati ...

This paper presents a general analytical model for predicting the magnetic field of slotless permanent-magnet machines. The model takes into account the effect of eddy currents in conductive regions and notably in conductive permanent magnets without negle ...

Injection molding is known to create a layered anisotropicmorphologyacross the sample thickness due to varying shear and cooling ratesduring the manufacturing process. In this study, scanning small-angleX-ray scattering was used to visualize and quantify t ...

Magnetic beads (MB) have now proven to be a powerful tool in both research and biomedical applications. They are available in a wide range of sizes (from nm to several µm) and their surface can be modified with molecules having biological specificities and ...

Magnetic topological insulators and semimetals are a class of crystalline solids whose properties are strongly influenced by the coupling between non-trivial electronic topology and magnetic spin configurations. Such materials can host exotic electromagnet ...

This paper introduces the concept of ring magnets for magnetic beads (MBs) trapping in a capillary. Such magnets enable an easy insertion of a capillary simply like a pearl on a string. With this system, high magnetic forces are obtained thanks to the prox ...

The modern world is heavily reliant on electromagnetic devices to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. These devices are fundamental to powering our society, and the growing need for automated production lines and electrified tr ...

Droplet breakup is an important phenomenon in the field of microfluidics to generate daughter droplets. In this work, a novel breakup regime in the widely studied T-junction geometry is reported, where the pinch-off occurs laterally in the two outlet chann ...

Until now, the preferred solution for MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) actuation is the electrostatic one. The main reason is that this kind of actuators can be easily manufactured following the microfabrication rules, as their geometry perfectly fi ...

In this thesis we evaluate the potential of the Early Separation Scheme for the Luminosity Upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The main goal of the Early Separation Scheme is to reduce the crossing angle between the proton beams at the collision po ...

A Magnetic Switchable Device (MSD) is a ferromagnetic circuit using permanent magnets where the flux can circulate between different paths when its configuration is changed. This routes or cancels the flux through specific surfaces, and thus turns on or of ...

The increasing challenges caused by the growing and aging population and the fast pace of life are calling for a change of our current medical care system towards being rapid, easy, and on-demand self-care. Empowerment with the self-caring components such ...

With the growing importance of miniaturized energy applications and the development of micro Total Analysis Systems (μTAS), we have realized microfluidic devices, namely, magnetic micropumps, microfluidic fuel cells and membrane-based protein preconcentrat ...

A device for transporting magnetic or magnetisable microbeads ( 25 ) in a capillary chamber ( 14 ) comprises a permanent magnet ( 10 ) or an electromagnet ( 11 ) for subjecting the capillary chamber to a substantially uniform magnetic field, to apply a per ...

Smart polymeric materials based soft actuators are flexible, lightweight, and can deliver a wide range of actu-ations. Thus, they are ideal for applications requiring delicate and unconventional motions, such as biomedical and soft robotics. This paper rep ...

High-quality single crystals of KCo2As2 with the body-centered tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure were grown using KAs self flux. Structural, magnetic, thermal, and electrical transport properties were investigated. No clear evidence for any phase transitions w ...

Finite element numerical simulations were carried out in 2D geometries to map the magnetic field and force distribution produced by rectangular permanent magnets as a function of their size and position with respect to a microchannel. A single magnet, two ...

The development of new industrial applications has diverted the focus of research towards compacter and faster rotatory drives. These requirements push the classical ball-bearings of electric motors to the limits in terms of operational lifetime and fricti ...
