The atomic configuration of phases and their interfaces is fundamental to materials design and engineering. Here, we unveil a transition metal oxide interface, whose formation is driven by energetic influences─epitaxial tensile strain versus oxygen octahed ...

The oxidation behavior of stoichiometric Ti0.12Al0.21B0.67 coatings is investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) after oxidizing for 1, 4 and 8 h at 700 degrees C and at 800 and 900 degrees C. In the as deposited state, a similar to ...

The application of perovskite photovoltaics is hampered by issues related to the operational stability upon exposure to external stimuli, such as voltage bias and light. The dynamic control of the properties of perovskite materials in response to light cou ...

Purpose: Although clinical 7T MRI offers various advantages compared to lower field strengths, achieving spatially uniform flip angle distributions remains a challenge. Sampling Perfection with Application optimized Contrast using different flip angle Evol ...

Whole-cell biophotovoltaic (BPV) devices leverage photoautotrophic microorganisms like cyanobacteria to convert sunlight and water into bioelectricity. They are capable of growing on sequestered carbon dioxide (CO2), eliminating the need to add exogenous o ...

Energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectrum imaging yields compositional information with a spatial resolution down to the atomic level. However, experimental limitations often produce extremely sparse and noisy EDX spectra. Under such conditions, every detecte ...

Gas-assisted focused electron beam-induced deposition (FEBID) as a direct, minimally invasive 3D nanopatterning tool offers many advantages in making nanostructures with complex shapes and novel compositions for evolving nanotechnological applications. In ...

Pacinian corpuscles are among the most sensitive mechanoreceptors found in vertebrates, and they are tuned to vibrations in the highest perceptible frequency range (100 to 2000 Hz). One of their anatomical hallmarks is the onion-like cell layers surroundin ...

Biomolecular condensates play important roles in a wide array of fundamental biological processes, such as cellular compartmentalization, cellular regulation, and other biochemical reactions. Since their discovery and first observations, an extensive and e ...

The transition from planar to three-dimensional (3D) magnetic nanostructures represents a significant advancement in both fundamental research and practical applications, offering vast potential for next-generation technologies like ultrahigh-density stora ...

Advancing quantum technologies depends on the precise control of individual quantum systems, the so-called qubits, and the exploitation of their quantum properties. Nowadays, expanding the number of qubits to be entangled is at the core of the developments ...

Significance: Fluorescence guidance is used clinically by surgeons to visualize anatomical and/or physiological phenomena in the surgical field that are difficult or impossible to detect by the naked eye. Such phenomena include tissue perfusion or molecula ...

The visualization and manipulation of proteins in live cells are critical for studying complex biological processes. Self-labeling proteins do so by enabling the specific and covalent attachment of synthetic probes, offering unprecedented flexibility in th ...

With the advances in clean technologies, the role of fuel cells and batteries is becoming increasingly vital. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells are known to be the best candidates for low-temperature and portable operations, such as hydrogen cars. The ef ...

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a widely used imaging tool for obtaining a variety of information for a range of samples. Although it was initially intended to serve as a method of observing very flat solid surfaces, its use expanded into several other fi ...

This thesis presents the development, construction, and benchmark of an experimental platform that combines cold fermionic 6Li atoms with locally controllable light-matter interactions. To enable local control, a new device, the cavity-microscope, was crea ...

The initial and evolving microstructure during the tensile test of two Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni shape memory alloys, with and without V, C and fabricated by laser powder bed fusion are investigated and compared via electron backscattered diffraction, transmiss ...

Controlled atomic patterning is an attractive tool to fine tune properties of graphitic lattice. Several O-functionalized derivatives of graphitic lattice have been widely studied, e.g., graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and functionalized carbon nan ...

Halide perovskite nanocrystals are promising materials for optoelectronic applications. Metal doping provides an avenue to boost their performance further, e.g., by enhancing light emission, or to provide additional functionalities, such as nanoscale magne ...

Quantum ghost imaging can be an important tool in making optical measurements. One of the most useful aspects of ghost imaging is the unique ability to correlate two sets of independently collected information. We aim to use the principles of ghost imaging ...
