This work focuses on the coupling of trimmed shell patches using Isogeometric Analysis, based on higher continuity splines that seamlessly meet the

C^1

requirement of Kirchhoff-Love-based discretizations. Weak enforcement of coupling conditions is achiev ...

Numerical multiscale methods usually rely on some coupling between a macroscopic and a microscopic model. The macroscopic model is incomplete as effective quantities, such as the homogenized material coefficients or fluxes, are missing in the model. These ...

This work studies the nearshore hydrodynamics of a shallow turbulent flow entering a laterally unconfined quiescent ambient with a sloping bottom boundary. Examples of such flow are neutrally buoyant ebb tidal jets and hyperpycnal river plumes entering ope ...

This paper considers "delta-almost Reed-Muller codes", i.e., linear codes spanned by evaluations of all but a delta fraction of monomials of degree at most d. It is shown that for any delta > 0 and any epsilon > 0, there exists a family of delta-almost Ree ...

The one-dimensional transient numerical code of JJ Cooling Innovation has been significantly improved to simulate the thermal/hydraulic performance of pulsating heat pipes (PHPs). Using a mechanistic approach, the liquid slug and vapor plug flows and their ...

This study presents a general approach to the topology design of tensegrities with rigid bodies. To the best of the authors' knowledge, all existing topology design methods of tensegrities focus on tensegrities that only consist of members carrying axial f ...

Binary dielectric metasurfaces are arrays of sub-wavelength structures that act as a thin layer of artificial material. They are generally lossless and relatively simple to fabricate since only a single structuring step is required. By carefully designing ...

In any communication system, there exist two dimensions through which the information at the source becomes distorted before reaching the destination: the noisy channel and time. Messages transmitted through a noisy channel are susceptible to modification ...

The use of a Bayesian filter (e.g., Kalman filter) for the fusion of information from satellite positioning and inertial navigation is a common approach in many applications, where the knowledge of position, velocity, and attitude in space are of great int ...

Out of plane instability of reinforced concrete walls is a failure mechanism observed rather recently following the earthquakes in Chile (2010) and New Zealand (2011). Global out of plane instability is a phenomenon that may occur in thin walls, subjected ...

This paper deals with fast simulations of the hemodynamics in large arteries by considering a reduced model of the associated fluid-structure interaction problem, which in turn allows an additional reduction in terms of the numerical discretisation. The re ...

This paper investigates issues that have arisen in recent efforts to revise long-standing knockdown factors for elastic shell buckling, which are widely regarded as being overly conservative for well-constructed shells. In particular, this paper focuses on ...

Polar codes are a recently proposed family of provably capacity-achieving error-correction codes that received a lot of attention. While their theoretical properties render them interesting, their practicality compared to other types of codes has not been ...

Since the first applications of structural concrete, the shear behaviour of one-way slabs without transverse reinforcement has been largely investigated. Nevertheless, currently in the scientific community there is no general agreement on the mechanisms of ...

An evaluation of cement- and resin-based grout materials for applications in carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) ground anchor heads composed of high-strength grout and a CFRP strap was conducted. Uniaxial compression experiments were performed on cylin ...

Inertial sensors are increasingly being employed in different types of applications. The reduced cost and the extremely small size makes them the number-one-choice in miniature embedded devices like phones, watches, and small unmanned aerial vehicles. The ...

A technique to setup a simply supported rectangular plane panel for laboratory vibroacoustic tests is described and validated. For a given panel fixed to thin vertical supports, a dimensionless parameter is proposed to size these supports following a desir ...

Hybrid simulation can provide significant advantages for large-scale experimental investigations of the seismic response of structures through collapse, particularly when considering cost and safety of conventional shake table tests. Hybrid simulation, how ...

The instrumented Timed "Up and Go" test (iTUG) has the potential for playing an important role in providing clinically useful information regarding an individual's balance and mobility that cannot be derived from the original single-outcome Timed "Up and G ...

The increasing demand for housing in Colombia and several neighbouring countries, together with the large relative cost of the materials, has prompted city administrations to build thin reinforced concrete (RC) wall buildings with a single layer of reinfor ...
