The increasing demand for housing in Colombia and several neighboring countries, together with the large relative cost of the materials, has prompted city administrations to build thin reinforced concrete (RC) wall buildings with a single layer of reinforc ...

Kinematic couplings are used when two rigid bodies need to be repeatedly and accurately positioned with respect to each other. They allow for sub-micron positioning repeatability by suppressing play and reducing strains in the bodies. Typical applications ...

Polar codes are constructed for arbitrary channels by imposing an arbitrary quasi-group structure on the input alphabet. Just as with usual polar codes, the block error probability under successive cancellation decoding is O(2^(-N^(1/2-epsilon))), where N ...

In modern unreinforced masonry buildings with stiff RC slabs, walls of the top floor are most susceptible to out-of-plane failure. The out-of-plane response depends not only on the acceleration demand and wall geom-etry but also on the static and kinematic ...

In recent years, the independent measurement of wall shear stress with oil-film or oil-drop interferometry has become a cornerstone of turbulent-boundary-layer research as many arguments depend critically on a precise knowledge of the skin friction tau(w)* ...

Information theory has long pointed to the promise of physical layer cooperation in boosting the spectral efficiency of wireless networks. Yet, the optimum relaying strategy to achieve the network capacity has till date remained elusive. Recently however, ...

This paper investigates the structural behaviour of RC flat slabs supported on rectangular interior columns and the influence of the loading conditions (one or two-way bending) on their punching shear strength. The punching shear strength of slabs at recta ...

Designing a communication protocol for sensor networks often involves obtaining the right trade-off between energy efficiency and end-to-end packet error rate. In this article, we show that network coding provides a means to elegantly balance these two goa ...

Large-eddy simulations are performed to evaluate the performance of the surface boundary condition downwind of a rough-to-smooth surface transition. Two types of boundary conditions are tested: (1) The standard formulation based on local application of the ...

Iterative detection and decoding (IDD), combined with spatial-multiplexing multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission, is a key technique to improve spectral efficiency in wireless communications. In this paper we present the—to the best of our know ...
