Space-time symmetries are a crucial ingredient of any theoretical model in physics. Unlike internal symmetries, which may or may not be gauged and/or spontaneously broken, space-time symmetries do not admit any ambiguity: they are gauged by gravity, and an ...

A systematic investigation on Mg doped and undoped InGaN epilayers grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy has been conducted. Single phase InGaN alloys across the entire composition range were synthesized and Mg was doped into InxGa1-xN (0.1

We study oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and investigate the validity of the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) picture in overdoped cuprate superconductors. Using large-scale exact diagonalization of the three-orbital Hubbard model, we observe the ...

We numerically construct asymptotically AdS(4) solutions to Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. These have a dipolar electrostatic potential turned on at the conformal boundary S-2 x R-t. We find two classes of geometries: AdS soliton solutions that encode th ...

New advances in X-ray diffraction, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) using synchrotron radiation have now provided compelling evidence for a short-range charge density wave phase (CDW) called ...

Visible light active photoelectrodes for hydrogen generation by solar photoelectrochemical water splitting have been under scrutiny for many decades. In particular, the role of electron holes and charge transfer remains controversial. We have investigated ...

The effect of irregular hole shape on the spectrum and radiation losses of a photonic crystal waveguide is studied using Bloch-mode expansion. Deviations from a circular hole are characterized by a radius fluctuation amplitude and correlation angle. It is ...

We propose a semiclassical method to calculate S-matrix elements for two-stage gravitational transitions involving matter collapse into a black hole and evaporation of the latter. The method consistently incorporates back-reaction of the collapsing and emi ...

We investigate the structural evolution of polycrystalline zinc oxide films grown by low pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The goal is to achieve larger grains-leading to higher charge carrier mobility from lower grain boundary density-by c ...

Under broad assumptions, breaking of Lorentz invariance in gravitational theories leads to tension with unitarity because it allows for processes that apparently violate the second law of thermodynamics. The crucial ingredient of this argument is the exist ...

The small-molecule-based hole-transporting material methoxydiphenylamine-substituted carbazole was synthesized and incorporated into a CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cell, which displayed a power conversion efficiency of 16.91%, the second highest conversion ...

Single-layer transition metal dichalcogenide WSe2 has recently attracted a lot of attention because it is a 2D semiconductor with a direct band gap. Due to low doping levels, it is intrinsic and shows ambipolar transport. This opens up the possibility to r ...

We propose a new content-aware image resizing scheme, "Stream Carving", which is based on the well-known seam carving method. Our algorithm may introduce larger seams in the retargeted image, i.e. seams with a width larger than one pixel, that we call "str ...

In this thesis, the wafer-scale fabrication of SiN membranes, Au films and Au membranes with arrays of sub-µm holes is described. Two conceptually different processes (1) and (2) were developed, both of which are based on nanosphere lithography (NSL) with ...

The kinetic competition between electron-hole recombination and water oxidation is a key consideration for the development of efficient photoanodes for solar driven water splitting. In this study, we employed three complementary techniques, transient absor ...
