Urinary incontinence (UI) is prevalent and distressing medical condition affecting millions of patients worldwide. Current treatment options for severe cases often involve surgical intervention, such as the implantation of an artificial urinary sphincter ( ...

Neuroprosthetic devices used for the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction, such as incontinence or urinary retention, apply a pre-set continuous, open-loop stimulation paradigm, which can cause voiding dysfunctions due to neural adaptation. In the ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an interesting and promising approach to tackle a broad spectrum of cancer. With the combination of a photosensitizer, light and oxygen, PDT achieves a unique selectivity by the production of localized reactive oxygen species ...

Nowadays, photobiomodulation (PBM) in combination with chemotherapy or other therapeutic approaches is an attractive adjuvant modality for cancer treatment. Targeted destruction of cancer cells is one of the main ad-vantages of photodynamic therapy (PDT). ...

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) are the most common bacterial pathogens causing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Driven by the development of antibiotic resistant UPEC strains, UTIs have become a major public health issue and generate substantial hea ...

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are amongst the most common bacterial infections and are the second-most frequent reason for antibiotic prescriptions. Moreover, in about 25% of all treated cases, recurrence of infection occurs. Uropathogenic Escherichia co ...

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) proliferate within superficial bladder umbrella cells to form intracellular bacterial communities (IBCs) during early stages of urinary tract infections. However, the dynamic responses of IBCs to host stresses and anti ...

Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) is produced in the mitochondria and used as fluorescent contrast agent or photosensitizer after exogenous 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) delivery in cancer photodynamic detection and therapy (PDT). Although routinely used in the clini ...

Purpose Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive malignant primary brain tumor. The unfavorable prognosis despite maximal therapy relates to high propensity for recurrence. Thus, overall survival (OS) is quite limited and local failure remains the fundame ...

Significance: Side effects of many cancer treatments are associated with the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in normal tissues. This explains why patients treated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) often suffer from skin photosensitization, whereas ...

Ureteral stents are small flexible tubes which are clinically used to restore the urine drainage in presence of obstructions of the ureteral lumen such as tumours, kidney/ureteral stones. The lifetime risk of developing urinary stones is about 20% in men a ...

Acting as an extracellular matrix protein receptor, alpha(v)beta(3) integrin becomes an appealing target for photodynamic therapy of bladder cancer. Here, specific alpha(v)beta(3)-integrin-targeting porphyrinato-gadolinium complexes (Gd-PEG-R-n) are demons ...

In patients suffering from underactive bladder (UAB), the contraction of the detrusor muscle has insufficient strength or duration to ensure efficient bladder emptying. Although catheterisation is currently the most effective method to empty the bladder, i ...

Current treatments for underactive bladder (UAB) have negative side effects, such as urinary tract infections, mainly because devices used for bladder emptying are in direct contact with urine (e.g. permanent or intermittent catheterisation). Moreover, mos ...

The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in normal tissues is associated with side effects of many cancer treatments. This is, in particular, the case for the skin photosensitization experienced by certain patients subjected to PDT based on a system ...

Glioblastoma multiforme are considered to be aggressive high-grade tumors with poor prognosis for patient survival. Photodynamic therapy is one of the adjuvant therapies which has been used for glioblastoma multiforme during last decade. Hypericin, a photo ...

The determination of the oxygen partial pressure (pO(2)) in real time in living biological tissues is of high interest for numerous therapeutics, including photodynamic therapy (PDT) and radiotherapy. The minimally invasive and real-time measurement of the ...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is based on the combined administration of photosensitizing drugs and light to treat a variety of malignant, pre-malignant and also non-malignant diseases. The reactive species resulting from the excitation of the photosensitizer ...

Tumor vasculature is known to be poorly organized leading to increased leakage of molecules to the extravascular space. This process can potentially increase interstitial fluid pressure impairing intra-tumoral blood flow and oxygen supply, and can affect d ...

Urological tissue engineering offers alternative solutions for congenital and acquired diseases of the urinary tract, which may require reconstructive surgery. It evolves to overcome complications, which might be encountered after surgery. Therefore, tissu ...
