Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an effective clinical treatment for a number of different cancers. PDT can induce hypoxia and inflammation, pro-angiogenic side effects, which may counteract its angio-occlusive mechanism. The combination of PDT with anti-angi ...

A severe complication of spinal cord injury is loss of bladder function (neurogenic bladder), which is characterized by loss of bladder sensation and voluntary control of micturition (urination), and spontaneous hyperreflexive voiding against a closed sphi ...

Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with Metvix® is a good therapeutic option to treat actinic keratosis, but it presents drawbacks (pain, lesion recurrences, heterogeneous outcome), emphasizing the possible need to individualize treatment. Objective: W ...

Several urinary tract disorders, such as hypospadias or bladder cancer, require reconstructive surgery to preserve the patient's quality of life and at times even save their life. The current available surgical treatments, involving grafts from other tissu ...

The expression of N-cadherin, characteristic of various cancers, very often leads to changes in the cells' adhesive properties. Thus, we sought to find out if N-cadherin expressed in various, but cancer-related cells, differs in its functional properties t ...

An estimated 400 million people worldwide suffer from bladder diseases. However, little is known at the cellular level as to what causes or initiates many of these diseases. Therefore, this thesis has focused on understanding one cell type within the bladd ...

Tissue-engineered grafts for the urinary tract are being investigated for the potential treatment of several urologic diseases. These grafts, predominantly tubular-shaped, usually require in vitro culture prior to implantation to allow cell engraftment on ...

OBJECTIVES: The pre-treatment of tumour neovessels by low-level photodynamic therapy (PDT) improves the distribution of concomitantly administered systemic chemotherapy. The mechanism by which PDT permeabilizes the tumour vessel wall is only partially know ...

The concentration of oxygen and its rate of consumption are important factors in certain medical treatments, such as radiotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). Measuring the tissue concentration of oxygen or its partial pressure (pO2) can be achieved by ...

Tissular oxygen concentration plays a key role during photodynamic therapy (PDT). Therefore, monitoring its local oxygen partial pressure (pO(2)) may help predict and/or control the outcome of a PDT treatment. The first real-time, in vivo measurements of t ...

An asymmetric cell division (ACD) is defined as a division that gives rise to two daughter cells with different fates. It is the most common type of division during development. Analogous to Drosophila neuroblasts, proteins involved in ACD such as Insc and ...

Since several decades, the physicians are able to access hollow organs with endoscopic methods, which serve both as diagnostic and surgical means in a wide range of disciplines of the modern medicine (e.g. urology, pneumology, gastroenterology). Unfortunat ...

Targeted angiostatic therapy receives major attention for the treatment of cancer and exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been used as an effective clinical approach for these diseases. Since PDT can cause an an ...

Fluorescence imaging for detection of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer is based on the selective production and accumulation of fluorescing porphyrins-mainly, protoporphyrin IX-in cancerous tissues after the instillation of Hexvix (R). Although the sensi ...
