Quantum dots (QDs) are the result of quantum confinement in the three spatial directions, as such they exhibit remarkable properties, of which the most important is perhaps the absence of a continuum of states. The allowed energetic levels are discrete, si ...

The self-assembly of a single layer of organic molecules on a substrate is a powerful strategy to modify surfaces and interfacial properties. Thiolates, silanes, phosphonates and carboxylates are widely used head-groups to link organic molecules to specifi ...

Blue III-nitride light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used nowadays in solid-state lighting, as white light can be produced by combining yellow phosphors and blue LEDs. This technology has the advantage to have a higher luminous efficiency than incandes ...

Since the seminal report about the first Candela- class-brightness InGaN blue light- emitting diodes (LEDs) by Shuji Nakamura et al. in 1994, III-nitride semiconductors have been one of the most important platforms for optoelectronic devices. The achieve ...

We explore the photoluminescence (PL) properties of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) quantum emitters embedded within atomically thin graphene/h-BN heterostructures fabricated by mechanical transfer. Stable light emission could be observed from h-BN emitters ...

The availability of thin-film lithiumniobate on insulator (LNOI) and advances in processing have led to the emergence of fully integrated LiNbO3 electro-optic devices. Yet to date, LiNbO3 photonic integrated circuits have mostly been fabricated using non-s ...

Optical nanocavities enhance light-matter interaction due to their high quality factors (Q) and small modal volumes (V). The control of light-matter interaction lies at the heart of potential applications for integrated optical circuits, including optical ...

Semiconductor materials have given rise to today's digital technology and consumer electronics. Widespread adoption is closely linked to the ability to process and integrate them in devices at scale. Where flexibility and large surfaces are required, such ...

Silicon nitride has recently attracted significant interest for nonlinear integrated optics. In addition to its excellent linear properties, silicon nitride offers a bandgap larger than silicon, and a wide transparency window spanning from the visible all ...

Organic upconversion devices (OUCs) consist of an organic infrared photodetector and an organic visible light-emitting diode (OLED), connected in series. OUCs convert photons from the infrared to the visible and are of use in applications such as process c ...

Blue light-emitting diodes based on III-nitride semiconductors are nowadays widely used for solid-state lighting. They exhibit impressive figures of merit like an internal quantum efficiency close to 100%. This value is intriguing when considering the high ...

The past decade has witnessed major advances in the development and system-level applications of photonic integrated microcombs, that are coherent, broadband optical frequency combs with repetition rates in the millimeter-wave to terahertz domain. Most of ...

The generation of dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators has provided a route to compact frequency combs of high repetition rate, which have already been employed for optical frequency synthesizers, ultrafast ranging, coherent telecommunicati ...

The pursuit of high-speed and on-chip optical communication systems has promoted extensive exploration of all-optical control of light-matter interactions via nonlinear optical processes. Here, we have numerically investigated the ultrafast dynamic switchi ...

Critical thickness and strain relaxation of c-plane GaN layers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on AlN were studied as a function of growth temperature and threading dislocation density (TDD). For this purpose we used AlN/sapphire templates and AlN single c ...

This thesis is dedicated to the growth and characterization of the optoelectronic properties of III-V semiconductor nanostructures namely nanowires and nanoscale membranes. III-V semiconductors possess promising intrinsic properties like direct band gap, h ...

The mechanisms contributing to experimental quality factors of shortwavelength (lambda = 440-480 nm) III-nitride on silicon one-dimensional photonic crystal cavities were quantified. Fluctuations in fundamental and first-order cavity mode wavelength and qu ...
