Microscopic visualisation of optically transparent samples has been a topic of interest for several decades. Features such as density or chemical composition can influence the optical phase of transmitted light, and phase contrast can reveal these structur ...

Low-energy electron holography (LEEH) is one of the few techniques capable of imaging large and complex three-dimensional molecules, such as proteins, on the single molecule level at subnanometer resolution. During the imaging process, the structural infor ...

We introduce a lock-in method to increase the phase contrast in incoherent differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging. This method improves the phase sensitivity by the analog removal of the background. The use of a smart pixel detector with in-pixel signal ...

Controversy in the description/identification of so-called intermediate phase(s) in PbHfO3, stable in the range similar to 420-480 K, has existed for a few decades. A synchrotron diffraction experiment on a partially detwinned crystal allowed the structure ...

On-chip signal processing at microwave frequencies is key for modern mobile communication. When one aims at small footprints, low power consumption, reprogrammable filters, and delay lines, magnons in low-damping ferrimagnets offer great promise. Ferromagn ...

As an increase of intelligent and self-powered devices is forecasted for our future everyday life, the implementation of energy-autonomous devices that can wirelessly communicate data from sensors is crucial. Even though techniques such as voltage scaling ...

Microscopy is of high interest for biology since it allows imaging features that are too small to be seen with naked eyes. However, cells are mostly transparent to visible and infrared light which makes it difficult to see with a traditional microscope. To ...

This work reports a low power implementation of a 60Gb/s NRZ optical receiver (RX) in 14nm bulk CMOS finFET featuring a first-order digital CDR with high jitter tolerance (JTOL). The design includes a single phase-rotator (PR) with low complexity control l ...

Microstructures can be used to realize repetitive and singular high contrast features at different distances behind a structure. For practical applications, the amplitude field needs to be considered. To realize defined amplitude features at long distances ...

Optical frequency combs have the potential to revolutionize terabit communications(1). The generation of Kerr combs in nonlinear microresonators(2) is particularly promising(3), enabling line spacings of tens of gigahertz. However, such combs may exhibit s ...

Brown adipose fat tissue of a mouse dissipates the animal’s energy in the form of heat. Chronically recording the temperature of this tissue helps biologists to study the metabolism of the animal and gain new insights about the obesity in humans. Such temp ...

In this work, we apply a recent technique for the generation of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) dynamic gratings that are both localized and stationary to realize high-resolution distributed temperature sensing. The gratings generation method relies ...

We propose and experimentally demonstrate new architectures to realize multi-tap microwave photonic filters, based on the generation of a single or multiple dynamic Brillouin gratings in polarization maintaining fibers. The spectral range and selectivity o ...

Reflections from movable, dynamic acoustic gratings in polarization maintaining (PM) fibers are employed in the long variable delay of periodic, isolated pulses. The gratings are introduced by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) interaction between two c ...

This article presents a new approach for improving the power-delay performance of subthreshold source-couple logic (STSCL) circuits. Using a simple two-phase pipelining technique, it is possible to increase the activity rate of STSCL gates with negligible ...

Phase-sensitive X-ray imaging methods can provide substantially increased contrast over conventional absorption-based imaging, and therefore new and otherwise inaccessible information. Differential phase-contrast (DPC) imaging, which uses a grating interfe ...

A novel frequency synthesizer with a strong emphasis on low-power consumption (2mW) was developed for this thesis. A BAW-resonator was used for the design of the high-frequency oscillator. The BAW's high Q-Factor ensured a minimal power consumption, while ...

For the past couple of decades the desire to add more complexity to a computer chip, while simultaneously reducing the cost per bit, has been accommodated by down-scaling. This approach has been extremely successful in the past, but like all good things it ...

Obtaining high resolution 3D quantitative images is critical for elucidating the relationship between cell dynamics and physiological or pathological processes. However the feasibility of such cellular dynamic studies is limited by the resolution of the 3D ...

The recent advances made in MEMS and particularly in RF MEMS technology are enabling new architectures for the integration of RF transceivers with improved performance and smaller size. Several fundamental building blocks benefit from the availability of h ...
