Myoelectric prostheses allow users to recover lost functionality by controlling a robotic device with their remaining muscle activity. Such commercial devices can give users a high level of autonomy, but still do not approach the dexterity of the intact hu ...

From surgery to watchmaking, fine-manipulation skills highly rely on the dexterity afforded by both hands. Coordination is key to human dexterity. Specifically, humans need not only to govern the abundant intrinsic degrees of freedom (DOFs) to allocate con ...

Lower limb amputation (LLA) destroys the sensory communication between the brain and the external world during standing and walking. Current prostheses do not restore sensory feedback to amputees, who, relying on very limited haptic information from the st ...

As technology continues to evolve, robots are becoming an intrinsic part of our lives. While robots surpass human capabilities in precision and speed, they are far from matching humans' ability to adapt to unexpected changes. Humans can quickly and complia ...

Conventional leg prostheses do not convey sensory information about motion or interaction with the ground to aboveknee amputees, thereby reducing confidence and walking speed in the users that is associated with high mental and physical fatigue(1-4). The l ...

Providing Virtual Reality(VR) users with a 3D representation of their body complements the experience of immersion and presence in the virtual world with the experience of being physically located and more personally involved. A full-body avatar representa ...

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) can produce percepts that mimic somatic sensation and, thus, has potential as an approach to sensorize prosthetic limbs. However, it is not known whether ICMS could recreate act ...

Recent developments in virtual reality and robotic technologies have allowed investigating the behavioural and brain mechanisms that grounds self-consciousness in the multisensory (e.g. vision and touch) and sensorimotor processing of bodily signals. Yet, ...

In this article, we achieve a closed-loop control over haptic feedback, first time for an entirely soft platform. We prototyped a novel self-sensing soft pneumatic actuator (SPA) with soft strain sensors, called SPA-skin, which withstands large multiaxial ...

As the field of robotics continues to grow outside the manufacturing environment into our daily lives, the interactions between humans and robots are increasingly becoming close and dynamic. This type of environment requires robots to be less rigid, multi- ...

Hand amputation could dramatically degrade the life quality of amputees. Many amputees use prostheses to restore part of the hand functions. Myoelectric prosthesis provides the most dexterous control. However, they are facing high rejection rate. One of th ...

Recent research has highlighted the crucial role of the processing of somatosensory signals involving the torso for global aspects of Bodily Self Consciousness (BSC), i.e., the experience of the conscious "I" as embodied and localized within bodily space. ...

Recent studies have shown that direct nerve stimulation can be used to provide sensory feedback to hand amputees. The intensity of the elicited sensations can be modulated using the amplitude or frequency of the injected stimuli. However, a comprehensive c ...

Most prosthetic limbs can autonomously move with dexterity, yet they are not perceived by the user as belonging to their own body. Robotic limbs can convey information about the environment with higher precision than biological limbs, but their actual perf ...

Peripheral intraneural stimulation can provide tactile information to amputees. However, efforts are still necessary to identify encoding strategy eliciting percepts that are felt as both natural and effective for prosthesis control. Here we compared the n ...

Neuroprosthetics is a discipline that aims at restoring lost functions to people affected by a variety of neurological disorders or neuro-traumatic lesions. It combines the expertise of computer science and electrical, mechanical, and micro/nanotechnology ...

Upper limb amputation disrupts most daily activities and reduces the quality of life of affected individuals. Building a suitable prosthetic limb, which can restore at least some of the lost capabilities, is a goal which has been pursued for centuries. In ...

Understanding the external environment depends heavily on vision, audition, and touch. Like vision and audition, the human sense of touch is complex. Tactile perception is composed of multiple fundamental and physical experiences felt as changes in stiffne ...

Providing sensory feedback for myoelectric prosthetic users can not only increase the manipulation ability but can also introduce a feeling of embodiment. Previous research has demonstrated the feasibility of providing mechanotactile or vibrotactile feedba ...

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are neural prosthetics that enable closed-loop electrophysiology procedures. These devices are currently used in fundamental neurophysiology research, and they are moving toward clinical viability for neural rehabilitation. ...
