A recent publication by Bornes and colleagues explored the impact of the estrous cycle on mammary tumor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Using genetically engineered mouse models, Bornes and colleagues revealed that chemotherapy is less effective when ...

Tumorigenesis embodies the formation of a heterotypic tumour microenvironment (TME) that, among its many functions, enables the evasion of T cell-mediated immune responses. Remarkably, most TME cell types, including cancer cells, fibroblasts, myeloid cells ...

Metal-based drugs and imaging agents are extensively used in the clinic for the treatment and diagnosis of cancers and a wide range of other diseases. The current clinical arsenal of compounds operate via a limited number of mechanisms, whereas new putativ ...

The vast chemical space of metal and ligand combinations in Transition Metal Complexes (TMCs) gives rise to a rich variety of electronic excited states with local and non-local character such as intra-ligand (IL), metal-centered (MC), metal-to-ligand (MLCT ...

The Thermal Boundary Conductance (TBC) at the interface between metals and dielectrics is of key importance for heat transport in structures heterogeneous on a scale from 100 µm downwards. In this thesis the TBC of a large number of metal/dielectric couple ...

The organometallic ruthenium(II) [Ru(arene)Cl2PTA] PTA - 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane compound, RAPTA-C, represents an innovative anti-cancer therapeutic and a better-tolerated alternative to platinum (Pt)-based chemotherapeutic drugs in the treatment ...

In breast cancer, 15-20% of cases are reported with overexpression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) that causes rapid cancer progression and poor prognosis. Fortunately, HER2-targeted therapy using specific antibodies such as Trastuzumab ...

Platinum drugs are extensively used in the clinic to treat cancer, often leading to a palliative response rather than a cure. While DNA is considered to be the primary target of platinum drugs, there is no clear relationship between cellular platinum accum ...

Chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) is a common technique that is used for human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) assessment in breast cancer diagnosis. CISH is based on the enzymatic amplification of DNA markers, generating a colorimetric im ...

Following the identification of a ruthenium(II)-arene complex with an ethacrynic acid-modified imidazole ligand, which inhibits glutathione transferase (GST) and is cytotoxic to chemo-resistant cancer cells, a series of structurally related ruthenium(II)- ...

Mass spectrometry imaging is being increasingly used in metal-based anticancer drug development to study elemental and/or molecular drug distributions in different biological systems. The main analytical tools employed are SIMS (especially nanoSIMS), LA-IC ...

Chromogenic immunohistochemistry (IHC) is omnipresent in cancer diagnosis, but has also been criticized for its technical limit in quantifying the level of protein expression on tissue sections, thus potentially masking clinically relevant data. Shifting f ...

Cisplatin and other platinum compounds have had a huge impact in the treatment of cancers and are applied in the majority of anticancer chemotherapeutic regimens. The success of these compounds has biased the approaches used to discover new metal-based ant ...

Metal based anti-cancer drugs (metallodrugs) such as cisplatin are a cornerstone of cancer chemotherapy. However, development of this class of compound has been hindered by our lack of understanding of how they function. This is mainly because existing met ...

Compounds that combine metal-based drugs with covalently linked targeted organic agents have been shown, in some instances, to exhibit superior anticancer properties compared to the individual counterparts. Within this framework, we prepared a series of or ...

A genome and physiological comparison was made of the type strains of Desulfotomaculum species belonging to subgroup 1a and of 'Desulfotomaculum reducens' strain MI-1. Phenotypically, 'Desulfotomaculum reducens' strain MI-1 can be distinguished from the ot ...

Humic substances (HS) play key role in toxic metal binding and protecting aquatic microorganisms from metal-induced stress. Any environmental changes that could alter HS concentration and reactivity can be expected to modify metal complexation and thus aff ...

CONSPECTUS: The properties of transition metal complexes are interesting not only for their potential applications in solar energy conversion, OLEDs, molecular electronics, biology, photochemistry, etc. but also for their fascinating photophysical properti ...

The need for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents with improved relaxivity maintains the development of new Gd-III chelates as an intensive and demanding field of research. In this work, we introduce the new dimeric chelators bis{1,4,7,10-tetra ...

The syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of four new complex salts, (PPN){Mn-III(salphen)(MeOH)[M-III(CN)(6)]} 7MeOH (Mn2M 7MeOH) (M = Fe, Ru, Os and Co; PPN+ = bis(triphenylphosphoranylidene)ammonium cation; H2salphen = N,N'-bis(salicyliden ...
