Reactions between gas molecules, e.g. H-2 and CO2 and solids take place at the surface. The electronic states and the local geometry of the atomic arrangement determine the energy of the adsorbate, i.e. the initial molecule and the transition state. Here w ...

Metallic electrodes based on iron, nickel, and/or cobalt have re-emerged as promising cost-effective anodes for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to their simplicity and their in situ formation of a highly active oxy-hydroxide surface cataly ...

Supported aluminum-based complex hydrides (alanates) were investigated in view of their interaction at the interface. Nickel-containing porous carbon sheets (Ni-PCSs) were combined with various alanates, resulting in a decrease of the decomposition tempera ...

The methanation of carbon dioxide is an option for chemical storage of renewable energy together with greenhouse gas reutilization because it offers a product with a high energy density. The reaction CO2 + 4H(2) CH4 + 2H(2)O is performed on a Ru/Al2O3 cata ...

The main difference between the past energy economy during the industrialization period which was mainly based on mining of fossil fuels, e.g. coal, oil and methane and the future energy economy based on renewable energy is the requirement for storage of t ...

Electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals is a highly promising route to close the carbon cycle. Herein, Zn catalysts derived from electrochemical reconstruction of ZnO materials are presented as efficient CO2-to-CO catalysts. We found that ...

We present a new fast real time and quantitative gas analysis method by means of mass spectrometry (MS), which has approximately an order of magnitude faster sampling rate in comparison with a traditional gas chromatography. The method is presented and dis ...

Catalytic hydrogen combustion (CHC) plays a crucial role in enhancing the safety and efficiency of fuel cells and electrolysers, thereby promoting the H2 economy. To increase the catalytic activity of supported metal particles for CHC, the active surface a ...

We report on maximum entropy method study of the experimental atomic and ionic charges of LiBD4 in its low-temperature orthorhombic phase. Synchrotron radiation x-ray powder diffraction data, neutron powder diffraction data, and density functional calculat ...

Fossil fuels and materials on Earth are a finite resource and the disposal of waste into the air, on land, and into water has an impact on our environment on a global level. Using Switzerland as an example, the energy demand and the technical challenges, a ...

Metal hydrides are an interesting group of chemical compounds, able to store hydrogen in a reversible, compact and safe manner. Among them, A(2)B(7)-type intermetallic alloys based on La-Mg-Ni have attracted particular attention due to their high electroch ...

Direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) operate with liquid H2O2 and a high-energy-density NaBH4 solution. A facile, direct synthesis method using a non-noble nickel catalyst for the DBFC anode is shown. The complex anode reaction with an anion-exchange iono ...

Fe, Co, Ni and Cu are the main non-noble industrially significant catalysts in the CO2 and CO gas phase hydrogenation reaction towards hydrocarbons and alcohols. These catalysts are typically supported on metal oxides such as SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3 and ZnO, in ...

The hydrogen storage properties and crystal structures of YMgNi4-based alloys, which were synthesized from (2 - x)YNi2 and xMgNi(2) (0.6

A continuous production prototype for scaling up the synthesis of a graphene oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (GO/MWCNTs) composite as a hydrogen storage material has been proposed in this study. This prototype consists of an automatic feeding and mixin ...

Energy storage solutions are a vital component of the global transition toward renewable energy sources. The power-to-gas (PtG) concept, which stores surplus renewable energy in the form of methane, has therefore become increasingly relevant in recent year ...

Supported Co-based catalysts exhibit promising catalytic activities in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during alkaline water electrolysis. Surface functionalization of the support modulates the dispersion of the catalysts and their interaction with the ...

The synthesis of fuels from CO2 has made tremendous progress in recent years, although practical applications remain limited. Herein, we describe a cyclic process that produces MeOH from CO(2)via formamide intermediates, which are initially reduced using N ...

This study analyses the power to methane - and to methanol processes in the view of their efficiency in energy storage. A systematic investigation of the differences on the two production systems is performed. The energy storage potential of CO2 to methano ...

A new concept based on Power Plant Units, able to deliver renewable energy on demand, for the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy in Switzerland is presented. The technically realized efficiencies showed that complete electrification leads to ...
