A method for optimizing at least one of a geometry, an implantation procedure, and/or stimulation protocol of one or more electrodes for an electrical stimulation of a target structure in a nervous system of a living being by a computer device, the method ...

This study introduces a novel algorithm to detect unexpected slipping-like perturbations based on the comparison between actual leg joint angles and those predicted by a pool of adaptive oscillators. The approach grounds on the hypothesis that during postu ...

Objective. Ultrasounds (US) use in neural engineering is so far mainly limited to ablation through high intensity focused ultrasound, but interesting preliminary results show that low intensity low frequency ultrasound could be used instead to modulate neu ...

Background: Emerging research increasingly supports that epidural spinal cord electrical stimulation (EES) combined with neurorehabilitation can improve motor recovery in spinal cord injury (SCI) subjects. Patients with lesions involving the medullary cone ...

Background: Exoskeletons for lower and upper extremities have been introduced in neurorehabilitation because they can guide the patient's limb following its anatomy, covering many degrees of freedom and most of its natural workspace, and allowing the contr ...

Upper limb motor deficits in severe stroke survivors often remain unresolved over extended time periods. Novel neurotechnologies have the potential to significantly support upper limb motor restoration in severely impaired stroke individuals. Here, we revi ...

In lower limb prostheses, the physical interface constituted by the socket is a crucial component for the device success. This work proposes a new design based on a rigid frame integrated into a silicone structure which allows for a more comfortable biomec ...

Peripheral neural interfaces have been successfully used in the recent past to restore sensory-motor functions in disabled subjects and for the neuromodulation of the autonomic nervous system. The optimization of these neural interfaces is crucial for ethi ...

Neuroprosthetics is a discipline that aims at restoring lost functions to people affected by a variety of neurological disorders or neuro-traumatic lesions. It combines the expertise of computer science and electrical, mechanical, and micro/nanotechnology ...

Peripheral nerve interfaces (PNIs) record and/or modulate neural activity of nerves, which are responsible for conducting sensory-motor information to and from the central nervous system, and for regulating the activity of inner organs. PNIs are used both ...

Active functional rehabilitation procedures, exoskeleton application and prosthesis employment are essential tools for the society life reinstatement of subjects affected by neuromuscular disorders or victims of serious physical accident. In this paper we ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) impairs motor function and quality of life. Transcutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulation (tSCS) is a non-invasive method to restore motor function by activating spinal circuits below the lesion. However, its effectiveness is limited by i ...

Objective. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of basal ganglia effectively tackles motor symptoms of movement disorders such as Tourette syndrome (TS). The precise location of target stimulation site determines the range of clinical outcome in DBS patients, and ...

In this conceptual review, we highlight our strategy for, and progress in the development of corticospinal neuroprostheses for restoring locomotor functions and promoting neural repair after thoracic spinal cord injury in experimental animal models. We spe ...

The mechanical mismatch between soft neural tissues and stiff neural implants hinders the long-term performance of implantable neuroprostheses. Here, we designed and fabricated soft neural implants with the shape and elasticity of dura mater, the protectiv ...

Understanding how the human brain cortex behaves when the dynamical balance is unexpectedly challenged can be useful to enable fall prevention strategies during daily activities. In this respect, we designed and tested a novel methodological approach to ea ...

Unbalancing events during gait can end up in falls and, thus, injury. Detecting events that could bring to fall and consequently activating fall prevention systems before the impact may help to mitigate related injuries. However, there is uncertainty about ...

Retinal stimulation (RS) allows restoring vision in blind patients, but it covers only a narrow region of the visual field. Optic nerve stimulation (ONS) has the potential to produce visual perceptions spanning the whole visual field, but it produces very ...

Robotic exoskeletons provide programmable, consistent and controllable active therapeutic assistance to patients with neurological disorders. Here we introduce a prototype and preliminary experimental evaluation of a rehabilitative gait exoskeleton that en ...

BackgroundTo assist people with disabilities, exoskeletons must be provided with human-robot interfaces and smart algorithms capable to identify the user's movement intentions. Surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals could be suitable for this purpose, bu ...
