Providing somatosensory feedback to amputees is a long-standing objective in prosthesis research. Recently, implantable neural interfaces have yielded promising results in this direction. There is now considerable evidence that the nervous system integrate ...

Objective.Several training programs have been developed in the past to restore motor functions after stroke. Their efficacy strongly relies on the possibility to assess individual levels of impairment and recovery rate. However, commonly used clinical scal ...

Objective.Mobile Brain/Body Imaging (MoBI) frameworks allowed the research community to find evidence of cortical involvement at walking initiation and during locomotion. However, the decoding of gait patterns from brain signals remains an open challenge. ...

Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Stimulation (LIFUS) holds promise for the remote modulation of neural activity, but an incomplete mechanistic characterization hinders its clinical maturation. Here we developed a computational framework to model intramembr ...

Objective. The limited functionality of hand prostheses remains one of the main reasons behind the lack of its wide adoption by amputees. Indeed, while commercial prostheses can perform a reasonable number of grasps, they are often inadequate for manipulat ...

Background: In the recent past several invasive cortical neuroprostheses have been developed. Signals recorded from the motor cortex (area MI) have been decoded and used to control computer cursors and robotic devices. Nevertheless, few attempts have been ...

The emergence of robotic body augmentation provides exciting innovations that will revolutionize the fields of robotics, human-machine interaction and wearable electronics. Although augmentative devices such as extra robotic arms and fingers are informed b ...

The teleoperation of nonhumanoid robots is often a demanding task, as most current control interfaces rely on mappings between the operator’s and the robot’s actions, which are determined by the design and characteristics of the interface, and may therefor ...

Lower urinary tract dysfunction, such as incontinence or urinary retention, is one of the leading consequences of neurological diseases. This significantly impacts the quality of life for those affected, with implications extending not only to humans but a ...

In Italy, biomechanics research and the analysis of human and animal movement have had a very long history, beginning with the exceptional pioneering work of Leonardo da Vinci. In 1489, da Vinci began investigating human anatomy, including an examination o ...

The present invention concerns a thermal sensing device (1) and a sensory feedback system and method using such thermal sensing device, comprising at least one film (19) of electrically insulating polymer defining a global surface of the thermal sensing de ...

Recent experiments have shown that neural stimulation can successfully restore sensory feedback in upper-limb amputees improving their ability to control the prosthesis. However, the potential advantages of invasive sensory feedback with respect to non-inv ...

Human-machine interfaces (HMIs) can be used to decode a user's motor intention to control an external device. People that suffer from motor disabilities, such as spinal cord injury, can benefit from the uses of these interfaces. While many solutions can be ...

Ischemic damage to the brain triggers substantial reorganization of spared areas and pathways, which is associated with limited, spontaneous restoration of function. A better understanding of this plastic remodeling is crucial to develop more effective str ...

Spinal cord injuries can result in substantial loss of trunk control, imposing significant challenges for affected individuals. Body-machine interfaces driven by trunk motion offer the potential for controlling assistive devices while promoting trunk rehab ...

Enriched environments and tools are believed to promote grasp rehabilitation after stroke. We designed S2, an interactive grasp rehabilitation system consisting of smart objects, custom orthoses for selective grasp constraining, and an electrode array syst ...

The control of robotic prosthetic hands (RPHs) for upper limb amputees is far from optimal. Simultaneous and proportional finger control of a RPH based on EMG signals is still challenging. Based on EMG and kinematics recordings of subjects following a pre- ...

Background Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability, making the search for successful rehabilitation treatment one of the most important public health issues. A better understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying impairment and recovery is ...

An analysis method (200) for analysing the pressure exerted by a portion of the body and/or of a human prosthesis comprises the following steps: sampling data generated by the portion of the body and/or the human prosthesis during a threshold calibration p ...

Unmyelinated fibers account for a remarkable fraction of the peripheral nervous system and their activity is linked to many autonomic and somatic functions. While electrical recording of such activity from human-sized peripheral nerves holds significant po ...
