Background: Compensating for the effect of gravity by providing arm-weight support (WS) is a technique often utilized in the rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions such as stroke to facilitate the performance of arm movements during therap ...

Objective: To study motor cortex plasticity after a period of training with a new prototype of bidirectional hand prosthesis in three left trans-radial amputees, correlating these changes with the modification of Phantom Limb Pain (PLP) in the same period. ...

This study investigates the performance of an updated version of our pre-impact detection algorithm while parsing out hip kinematics in order to identify unexpected tripping-like perturbations during walking. This approach grounds on the hypothesis that du ...

Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) showed promises to improve standing and walking after neurological disorders. To date, EES has been delivered continuously, although time-dependent stimulations would likely be more efficient to activate specific subse ...

Numerous neurorehabilitative, neuroprosthetic, and repair interventions aim to address the consequences of upper limb impairments after neurological disorders. Although these therapies target widely different mechanisms, they share the common need for a pr ...

Despite recent progresses in robotic rehabilitation technologies, their efficacy for post-stroke motor recovery is still limited. Such limitations might stem from the insufficient enhancement of plasticity mechanisms, crucial for functional recovery. Here, ...

In the last decades, clinical neuroscience found a novel ally in neurotechnologies, devices able to record and stimulate electrical activity in the nervous system. These technologies improved the ability to diagnose and treat neural disorders. Neurotechnol ...

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak is causing a dramatic worsening in the already complicated living conditions of blind and visually impaired individuals. Social distancing is the most effective strategy to limit virus spread, but is extremely difficult for b ...

Nerve conduits may represent a valuable alternative to autograft for the regeneration of long-gap damages. However, no NCs have currently reached market approval for the regeneration of limiting gap lesions, which still represents the very bottleneck of th ...

Optic nerve stimulation holds great potential for visual prostheses. Its effectiveness depends on the stimulation protocol, which can be optimized to achieve cortical activation similar to that evoked in response to visual stimuli. To identify a target cor ...

Amyloidosis refers to a range of medical conditions in which misshapen proteins accumulate in various organs and tissues, forming insoluble fibrils. Cardiac amyloidosis is frequently linked to the buildup of misfolded transthyretin (TTR) or immunoglobulin ...

Advancements in neural engineering have enabled the development of Robotic Prosthetic Hands (RPHs) aimed at restoring hand functionality. Current commercial RPHs offer limited control through basic on/off commands. Recent progresses in machine learning ena ...

Objective. As artificial prostheses become more refined, they are most often used as a therapeutic option for hand amputation. By contrast to extra- or intraneural interfaces, regenerative nerve electrodes are designed to enable electrical interfaces with ...

Extra robotic arms (XRAs) are gaining interest in neuroscience and robotics, offering potential tools for daily activities. However, this compelling opportunity poses new challenges for sensorimotor control strategies and human-machine interfaces (HMIs). A ...

Background Neurological disorders, such as stroke and chronic pain syndromes, profoundly impact independence and quality of life, especially when affecting upper extremity (UE) function. While conventional physical therapy has shown effectiveness in provid ...

A method for determining the functional topography of a peripheral nerve ( 10 ) of a user comprising the steps of prearranging an electrode ( 100 ) comprising a number n of channels c i , with i = 1,2..., n, arranging the electrode (100) in such a way that ...

In a human robot interaction scenario, predicting the human motion intention is essential for avoiding inconvenient delays and for a smooth reactivity of the robotic system. In particular, when dealing with hand prosthetic devices, an early estimation of t ...

When a traumatic event causes complete denervation, muscle functional recovery is highly compromised. A possible solution to this issue is the implantation of a biodegradable polymeric tubular scaffold, providing a biomimetic environment to support the ner ...

This article illustrates the development and preliminary results of SELINE, a self-opening neural interface. The advantages of this innovative neural interface are: higher selectivity due to its three-dimensional structure and efficient anchorage system to ...

The desire for functional replacement of a missing hand is an ancient one. Historically, humans have replaced a missing limb with a prosthesis for cosmetic, vocational, or personal autonomy reasons. The hand is a powerful tool, and its loss causes severe p ...
