Closed-loop neural interfaces with on-chip machine learning can detect and suppress disease symptoms in neurological disorders or restore lost functions in paralyzed patients. While high-density neural recording can provide rich neural activity information ...

Human neural spheroids, 3D cellular aggregates of neurons and glial cells, are a compelling biological model for studying neuronal communication in physiological and pathological conditions, such as neurodevelopment and traumatic brain injury (TBI), respec ...

Hyperexcitability of peripheral sensory neurons plays a critical role in the development and maintenance of chronic pain. Pharmacological analgesics used in clinics reduce neuronal activity. They often come with non‐negligible side effects. Optogenetic app ...

One challenge in designing RF wireless bioelectronic devices is the impact of the interaction between electromagnetic waves and host body tissues on far-field wireless performance. In this paper, we investigate a peculiar phenomenon of implantable RF wirel ...

Objective.Electrical stimulation is an effective method for artificially modulating the activity of the nervous system. However, current stimulation paradigms fail to reproduce the stochastic and asynchronous properties of natural neural activity. Here, we ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) induces haemodynamic instability that threatens survival(1-3), impairs neurological recovery(4,5), increases the risk of cardiovascular disease(6,7), and reduces quality of life(8,9). Haemodynamic instability in this context is due ...

Reliable long-term function is crucial for flexible and soft bioelectronics. Mechanical defects and permeation of water molecules across the various device layers are the prime drivers of failure, and particularly in applications requiring continuous conta ...

Next-generation bioelectronic implants require miniaturization, durability, and long-term functionality. Thin film encapsulations, prepared with inorganic or hybrid organic/inorganic designs, are essential for ensuring protection, low water permeation, ada ...

Background: Cuff electrodes target various nerves throughout the body, providing neuromodulation therapies for motor, sensory, or autonomic disorders. However, when using standard, thick silicone cuffs, fabricated in discrete circular sizes, complications ...

Hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for bioelectronic interfaces due to their tissue-like properties and high-water content. However, conventional hydrogels often suffer from poor electrical conductivity and mechanical stability, limiting their p ...

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is an auditory neuroprosthesis that provides hearing to deaf patients by electrically stimulating the cochlear nucleus (CN) of the brainstem. Whether such stimulation activates one or the other of the CN's two major sub ...

Optoelectronic systems can exert precise control over targeted neurons and pathways throughout the brain in untethered animals, but similar technologies for the spinal cord are not well established. In the present study, we describe a system for ultrafast, ...

Considerable progress has been made in the last decade in implantable bioelectronic neurosystems. Yet most neural implants are used in acute and tethered experimental conditions. Here, we present a preliminary prototype of a multichannel system for simulta ...

Objective. Electrical stimulation of biological tissue is an established technique in research and clinical practice that uses implanted electrodes to deliver electrical pulses for a variety of therapies. Significant research currently explores new electro ...

A severe complication of spinal cord injury is loss of bladder function (neurogenic bladder), which is characterized by loss of bladder sensation and voluntary control of micturition (urination), and spontaneous hyperreflexive voiding against a closed sphi ...

In the exciting race to design and engineer biointegrated and body-like electronic systems, many efforts concentrate on the integration of hydrogels in electronic assemblies. The versatility of hydrogels chemistry combined with their tissue-mimicking prope ...

Neuroprosthetic devices used for the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction, such as incontinence or urinary retention, apply a pre-set continuous, open-loop stimulation paradigm, which can cause voiding dysfunctions due to neural adaptation. In the ...

Interfacing the human body with the next generation of electronics requires technological advancement in designing and producing bioelectronic circuits. These circuits must integrate electrical functionality while simultaneously addressing limitations in m ...

Adipose‐derived stem cells (ASC) are becoming one of the most exploited cells in peripheral nerve repair. They are fast‐growing and able to protect neurons from apoptosis; they can reduce postinjury latency and the risk of muscle atrophy. This study evalua ...

The auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is an auditory neuroprosthesis that provides hearing by electrically stimulating the cochlear nucleus (CN) of the brainstem. Our previous study (McInturff et al., 2022) showed that single-pulse stimulation of the dorsal ...
