Quasiquotes have been shown to greatly simplify the task of metaprogramming. This is in part because they hide the data structures of the intermediate representation (IR), instead allowing metaprogrammers to use the concrete syntax of the language they man ...

In this paper we advocate that it is time for a radical rethinking of database systems design. Developers should be able to leverage high-level programming languages without having to pay a price in efficiency. To realize our vision of abstraction without ...

We present Sudokube, a novel system that supports interactive speed querying on high-dimensional data using partially materialized data cubes. Given a storage budget, it judiciously chooses what projections to precompute and materialize during cube constru ...

In this paper, we present a framework for generating optimizing compilers for performance-oriented embedded DSLs (EDSLs). This framework provides facilities to automatically generate the boilerplate code required for building DSL compilers on top of the ex ...

Modern online services are shifting away from monolithic applications to loosely-coupled microservices because of their improved scalability, reliability, programmability and development velocity. Microservices communicating over the datacenter network req ...

This paper calls for a new breed of lightweight systems - dynamic data management systems (DDMS). In a nutshell, a DDMS manages large dynamic data structures with agile, frequently fresh views, and provides a facility for monitoring these views and trigger ...

Many data-driven social and Web applications involve collaboration and coordination. The vision of Declarative Data-Driven Coordination (D3C), proposed in Kot et al. [2010], is to support coordination in the spirit of data management: to make it data-centr ...

This paper studies architecting query compilers. The state of the art in query compiler construction is lagging behind that in the compilers field. We attempt to remedy this by exploring the key causes of technical challenges in need of well founded soluti ...

While serializability always guarantees application correctness, lower isolation levels can be chosen to improve transaction throughput at the risk of introducing certain anomalies. A set of transactions is robust against a given isolation level if every p ...

Vandevoort, B. Ketsman, C. Koch, and F. Neven. The popular isolation level Multiversion Read Committed (RC) trades some of the strong guarantees of serializability for increased transaction throughput. Sometimes, transaction workloads can be safely executed ...

In the context of incremental view maintenance (IVM), delta query derivation is an essential technique for speeding up the processing of large, dynamic datasets. The goal is to generate delta queries that, given a small change in the input, can update the ...

We introduce an approach to supporting high-dimensional data cubes at interactive query speeds and moderate storage cost. Our approach is based on binary(-domain) data cubes that are judiciously partially materialized; the missing information can be quickl ...

The aim of this paper is to serve as a lightweight introduction to concurrency control for database theorists through a uniform presentation of the work on robustness against Multiversion Read Committed and Snapshot Isolation. ...

Most learning methods with rank or sparsity constraints use convex relaxations, which lead to optimization with the nuclear norm or the`1-norm. However, several important learning applications cannot benet from this approach as they feature these convex no ...

Metaprograms are programs that manipulate (generate, analyze and evaluate) other programs. These tasks are greatly facilitated by quasiquotation, a technique to construct and deconstruct program fragments using quoted code templates expressed in the syntax ...

We generalize the bulk-synchronous parallel (BSP) processing model to make it better support agent-based simulations. Such simulations frequently exhibit hierarchical structure in their communication patterns which can be exploited to improve performance. ...

Squall is a scalable online query engine that runs complex analytics in a cluster using skew-resilient, adaptive operators. Squall builds on state-of-the-art partitioning schemes and local algorithms, including some of our own. This paper presents the over ...

The goal of multi-objective query optimization (MOQO) is to find query plans that realize a good compromise between conicting objectives such as minimizing execution time and minimizing monetary fees in a Cloud scenario. A previously proposed exhaustive MO ...

Datastores today rely on distribution and replication to achieve improved performance and fault-tolerance. But correctness of many applications depends on strong consistency properties—something that can impose substantial overheads, since it requires coor ...
