The unique achondrite NWA 7325 is an unusual olivine gabbro composed chiefly of calcic plagioclase (An(85-93)), diopsidic pyroxene (En(50.1-54.0) Wo(44.8-49.3) Fs(0.6-1.3)), and forsteritic olivine (Fo(97)). It is Al and Mg-rich and Fe and Na-poor and disp ...

The Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite (HED) suite is a family of differentiated meteorites that provide a unique opportunity to study the differentiation of small bodies. The likely parent-body of this meteorite group, (4) Vesta is presently under study by the D ...

Two petrographic settings of carbonaceous components, mainly filling open fractures and occasionally enclosed in shock-melt veins, were found in the recently fallen Tissint Martian meteorite. The presence in shock-melt veins and the deuterium enrichments ( ...

We present a series of molecular dynamics simulations of the shock compression of copper matrices containing a single graphite inclusion: these model systems can be related to some specific carbon-rich rocks which, after a meteoritic impact, are found to c ...

Shergottites and Chassignites practiced major deformation effects whose nature, magnitude and relevance were controversially evaluated and disputatively debated. Our studies of many shocked shergottites present, contrary to numerous previous reports, ample ...

We investigate the terahertz dynamics of liquid H2O as a function of pressure along the 450 K isotherm, by coupled quasielastic neutron scattering and inelastic X-ray scattering experiments. The pressure dependence of the single molecule dynamics is anomal ...

The Almahata Sitta MS-170 ureilite (a piece of a breccia originating from the asteroid, 2008 TC3) consists mainly of olivine, with many diamond and graphite grains existing between the olivine grains. The occurrences of the diamonds are unique; i.e., (i) s ...

Valence and spin states of Fe were investigated in a glass of almandine (Fe3Al2Si3O12) composition to 91 GPa by X-ray emission spectroscopy and energy- and time-domain synchrotron Mossbauer spectroscopy in the diamond-anvil cell. Changes in optical propert ...

Chemical weathering of Mg, Ca-silicates and alumino-silicates contributes significantly to the drawdown of atmospheric CO2 over long time scales. The present work focuses on how this mode of weathering may change in the presence of free-living bacteria in ...

Native metals of igneous origin are recognized as one of the distinctive features of basalts from the Moon. Our study demonstrates that the tiny Fe-Ni metal blebs nucleated from lunar magma exhibit unanticipated, nutshell-like, crystallographic microstruct ...

Gas hydrates consist of hydrogen-bonded water frameworks enclosing guest gas molecules and have been the focus of intense research for almost 40 y, both for their fundamental role in the understanding of hydrophobic interactions and for gas storage and ene ...

We carried out a series of silicate fractional crystallization experiments at lower mantle pressures using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Phase relations and the compositional evolution of the cotectic melt and equilibrium solids along the liquid lin ...

Controlling the stress in glass after laser exposure is of prime importance not only for photonics applications, but also for preserving the mechanical integrity of glass components in general. The sub-surface exposure of fused silica to femtosecond laser ...

Ureilites are ultramafic achondrites formed by igneous processes early in the history of the Solar System. Ureilites are heavily depleted in volatile elements, probably by evaporation at the surface of the ureilite parent body: however the moderately volat ...

We present an extensive study of the quantum dynamics of molecular hydrogen trapped within the nanocavities of two hydrate structures at low temperatures, namely, clathrate structure II and filled ice structure Cl. By inelastic neutron scattering measureme ...

Both seismic observations of dense low shear velocity regions and models of magma ocean crystallization and mantle dynamics support enrichment of iron in Earth’s lowermost mantle. Physical properties of iron-rich lower mantle heterogeneities in the modern ...

Planetary formation models show that terrestrial planets are formed by the accretion of tens of Moon-to Mars-sized planetary embryos through energetic giant impacts. However, relics of these large proto-planets are yet to be found. Ureilites are one of the ...

Tissint is a heavily shocked olivine-phyric shergottite. We investigated and documented several phase transformations and dissociation phenomena of olivine adjacent to and in many shock-induced melt-pockets of Tissint. Olivine grains entrained in the melt- ...

Thulium is a heavy rare earth element (REE) whose geochemical behavior is intermediate between Er and Yb, and that is not expected to be decoupled from these elements during accretion of planetary bodies and geological processes. However, irregularities in ...

Spin transitions in (Mg,Fe)SiO3 bridgmanite have important implications for the chemistry and dynamics of Earth's lower mantle, but have been complex to characterize in experiments. We examine the spin state of Fe in highly Fe-enriched bridgmanite synthesi ...
