Unreinforced masonry buildings with flexible timber floors are amongst the most vulnerable building typologies for seismic loading. Though flexible diaphragms play a role in the seismic behaviour of unreinforced masonry buildings, the impact of the connect ...

After an earthquake, the residual stiffness and strength of structural elements are typically estimated based on a qualitative visual inspection of cracks that is prone to error. In this paper a new approach is proposed to automatically estimate the update ...

The construction of dry-joint brick masonry that is subject to seismic loading can be modelled as a strategy problem wherein bricks must be laid to form a load resisting structure. To learn how to mount bricks while considering relevant engineering criteri ...

The present data paper describes an experimental campaign on five thin T-shaped reinforced concrete walls, including: details on the test units, materials, test setup, loading protocol, instrumentation, main features of each unit's response, organization o ...

The computational cost of detailed micro-modeling of masonry structures can be minimized with rigid block analysis methods, where a variational formulation is particularly interesting as it allows for nonlinear pushover analysis. This work investigates the ...

In Switzerland many new residential buildings are constructed as unreinforced masonry (URM) structures or as mixed structures where URM walls are coupled with reinforced concrete (RC) walls by RC slabs. At present the boundary conditions of URM walls subje ...

Explicit representation of uncertainties is essential to improve the reliability of seismic assessments of earthquake-damaged buildings, particularly when dealing with unreinforced masonry buildings. Modern inspection techniques use images for detecting an ...

When designing unreinforced masonry buildings, the wall stiffness and, consequently, the masonry elastic and shear modulus E and G are essential parameters. Current codes provide empirical estimates of the masonry elastic modulus and a ratio between the sh ...

We present a pipeline for the automatic generation of digital twins of free-standing buildings for damage assessment. Our method takes multiple view images of the target building as input and processes them to produce a 3D model in levels of detail (LOD) f ...

Modern unreinforced masonry buildings with reinforced concrete slabs are often retrofitted by inserting reinforced concrete walls. The main advantages of this technique are the increase in strength and displacement capacity with respect to masonry structur ...

The present study focuses on enhancing the seismic resistance of existing masonry structures. To that aim, the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthening serves to improve structural behaviour by attaching FRP strips to the masonry walls. Despite ...

Using unprocessed materials in construction is a promising approach to reducing energy and material consumption in the building industry. This paper presents a geometric planning algorithm for constructing multi-leaf masonry walls using natural stones. Our ...

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NLFEA) of the inelastic behaviour of RC walls are often carried out for uni-directional (in-plane) horizontal cyclic loading. In this paper the behaviour of RC walls with different cross-sections (T-shaped and U-shaped) s ...

A unidirectional shake-table test was performed on the half-scale prototype of a natural stone masonry building aggregate, to investigate the seismic performance of this type of historical construction and to assess the effectiveness of two retrofit soluti ...

An image-based methodology is presented for the automatic generation of geometric building models at LOD4, incorporating both interior and exterior geometrical information. Existing approaches often focus on simplified geometries for either exteriors or in ...

The qualitative aspect of visual inspection of damaged structures can be largely benefited by incorporating quantitative metrics. Moreover, automating this process requires the development of effective computational tools capable of making reliable assessm ...

The growing need for residential housing in Latin American countries has led to the construction of reinforced concrete buildings with wall thicknesses as low as 8–10 cm. Such walls have typically only a single layer of vertical rebars and are therefore pa ...

A large experimental campaign on the in-plane seismic response of rubble stone masonry walls is currently under development at the Structural Engineering platform laboratory at EPFL (Switzerland). The main objective of this campaign is the experimental inv ...

Damage to structural walls in the recent earthquakes in Chile (2010) and New Zealand (2011) demonstrated that modern reinforced concrete (RC) walls may not achieve the expected ductile response but could possibly be triggered by out-of-plane displacements ...

Reinforced concrete walls provide effective bracing against seismic lateral loading for buildings worldwide. In Latin America, seismic design provisions commonly adhere to the ACI 318 building code, which is predominantly based on United States constructio ...
