Spandrel elements in unreinforced brick masonry buildings with timber floors consist of a masonry spandrel supported by either a timber lintel or a masonry arch. When subjected to seismic loading, the force-deformation relationship of such spandrel element ...

When testing multi-storey structures, most testing facilities require the testing of a reduced-scale model. A literature review on tests of scaled masonry structural components revealed that scaling of masonry was rather challenging and often significant d ...

Masonry aggregates have developed throughout city centres of Europe due to a centuries-long densification process that generally lacked consistent planning or engineering. Adjacent units are connected either through interlocking stones or a layer of mortar ...

This limitation is circumvented by using scalable and non–memory–intensive harmonic expansions. In this paper, the projection of parametric surfaces onto disk and spherical harmonics bases is investigated, and three novel computationally efficient algorith ...

The masonry chapter of the new Eurocode 8 Part 1 contains several novelties, including new differentiation between unreinforced masonry typologies with regard to drift capacities and therefore q(D)-factors. Drift capacity models for masonry walls are empir ...

Cracks are the most important source of information about the damage that occurs to unreinforced masonry piers under seismic actions. To predict the structural state of unreinforced masonry piers after an earthquake, research models have been developed to ...

The current Eurocode 8 belongs to one of the most advanced international seismic design codes. This leading edge should be maintained in future revisions of the code while the code should become as user friendly as possible. This article makes several prop ...

This article presents results from the experimental testing of two half-scale RC U-shaped walls under quasi-static cyclic bi-directional loading along the diagonal direction of the U-shaped section, which were recently completed at EPFL. The main objective ...

The paper presents experimental investigations of friction properties (a) between adjacent sheathing panels made of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and (b) between OSB panels and glued laminated timber (GLT) frame members as they occur, for example, between pa ...

This paper is aimed at addressing the need for physically accurate and computationally effective models for predicting the response of shear-dominated reinforced concrete walls. The presented theory is based on a three-degree-of-freedom kinematic model for ...

Reused concrete rubble is a challenging material to design and construct with despite its potential for diverging waste from landfilling and energyintensive recycling. We propose a design to construction framework that leverages a camera and computationall ...

In many unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings reinforced concrete (RC) slabs or ring beams maintain the integrity of the building when subjected to seismic loading and redistribute forces between different URM piers. In addition, RC slabs and ring beams con ...

This paper presents a new methodology for the displacement-based seismic design of symmetric single-storey wood-frame buildings. Previous displacement-based design efforts were based on the direct displacement-based design approach, which uses a substitute ...

The seismic damage of masonry walls is reflected in cracks that tend to start at the head and bed joints and subsequently propagates through the masonry units. In this regard, the horizontal-to-vertical compressive strength ratio of bricks might have the a ...

Splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region of reinforced concrete (RC) members was common practice in buildings and bridges before the introduction of capacity design principles. Experimental and field observations showed that the p ...

Reliable methods for detecting pixels that represent cracks from laboratory images taken for digital image correlation (DIC) are required for two main reasons. Firstly, the segmented crack maps are used as an input for some DIC methods that are based on di ...

Assessing building damage after earthquakes requires a visual inspection of the damage, indicated by maps of the cracking pattern on walls, which could be standardized via automated algorithms. To quantitate this damage, fractal dimensions of these crack m ...

Recent research showed that the in-plane horizontal displacement capacity of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls depends on numerous factors that are not yet captured by current empirical drift capacity models; e.g., axial stress, shear span, geometry of the ...

The seismic response of historical masonry buildings is largely controlled by the effectiveness of wall-todiaphragm connections, which can be improved using injection anchors. Despite their use, there is a need for a better understanding of the performance ...

Research on irregular stone masonry walls is hampered by the lack of detailed geometrical models of their internal micro-structure, i.e. the shape and size of each stone and its position within the wall. Without such a geometric digital twin of walls teste ...
