A probabilistic approach is necessary to estimate the magnitude of the braking force that compares in terms of return period with the vertical traffic loads present in bridge design codes. A data set from a Danish Field Operational Test served as support t ...

Mid- to high-rise buildings in seismic areas are often braced by slender reinforced concrete (RC) walls, which are interconnected by RC floor diaphragms. In design it is typically assumed that the lateral forces are distributed in proportion to the wall’s ...

In this paper, we present a new method for upcycling concrete rubble waste into slender walls through the lightweight digital augmentation of mainstream construction machines. By using such method, the environmental impact of concrete construction and demo ...

The seismic assessment of existing masonry buildings is based on the prediction of their nonlinear response under lateral loading. This requires a reliable estimation of the force and displacement demand. For this purpose, modelling strategies using struct ...

Image information about the state of a building after an earthquake, which can be collected without endangering the post-earthquake reconnaissance activities, can be used to reduce uncertainties in response predictions for future seismic events. This paper ...

In many unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings reinforced concrete (RC) ring beams are introduced at each storey in order to maintain the integrity of the building when subjected to seismic loading. Such ring beams also contribute to the in-plane resistance ...

Out-of-plane failure of masonry walls is often responsible for the partial collapse of unreinforced masonry structures. Modeling the out-of-plane response of these walls is therefore key in the assessment of existing buildings. The paper presents a new tri ...

Displacement-based seismic design and assessment procedures require as key input parameter estimates of displacement capacities of the critical elements. The displacement capacities of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are typically determined by means of q ...

Modeling the seismic response of historical masonry buildings is challenging due to many aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. Additionally, the interaction between structural units further complicates predictions of the seismic behavior of unreinforced ma ...

Post-reconnaissance findings after recent earthquakes have shown that the effect of the vertical acceleration component of the ground motion can be more damaging than typically considered thus far, particularly in near-field regions where the ratio of vert ...

Empirical drift capacity models for in-plane loaded unreinforced masonry (URM) walls are derived from results of quasi-static cyclic shear-compression tests. The experimentally determined drift capacities are, however, dependent on the applied demand, i.e. ...

Seismic design of standard structures is typically founded on a force-based design approach. Over the years this approach has proven robust and easily applicable by design engineers and - in combination with capacity design principles - it provides a good ...

Spliced longitudinal reinforcement may result in a reduction of both strength and displacement capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) members. This applies in particular when lap splices are located in regions where inelastic deformations concentrate, such a ...

Experimental results gained from quasi-static cyclic tests on 34 slender structural reinforced concrete walls available in the literature are used to examine the shear deformations for displacement demands in the inelastic range. Based on these results the ...

During the last two decades, thin concrete walls have been frequently used to brace mid- to high-rise buildings in some Latin American countries. This structural system differs significantly in terms of wall geometry and reinforcement layout from tradition ...

Unreinforced masonry (URM) walls comprise vertical piers and horizontal spandrels, which together form the lateral load resisting system. Whereas past research yielded significant advances in the understanding of the force-deformation characteristics of ma ...

Though flexible diaphragms play a role in the seismic behaviour of unreinforced masonry buildings, the effect of the connections between floors and walls is rarely discussed or explicitly modelled when simulating the response of such buildings. These flexi ...

Quasi-static cyclic tests on reinforced concrete (RC) walls have shown that shear deformations can constitute a significant ratio of the total deformations when the wall is loaded beyond the elastic regime. For slender RC walls that form a stable flexural ...

In this paper, the impact of several sources of uncertainty on the seismic response of an experimentally tested building is assessed for the case of a post-earthquake scenario. The building comprises unreinforced masonry and reinforced concrete walls. It i ...

Examining the results of a large set of quasi-static cyclic tests on unreinforced masonry (URM) walls showed that the drift capacity of URM walls reduces with increasing wall size. Such a size effect is of concern since most wall tests were carried out on ...
