This paper presents the results of a series of shake-table tests on a half-scale, four-storey building with reinforced concrete (RC) and unreinforced masonry (URM) walls. Due to the lack of reference tests, the seismic behaviour of such mixed structures is ...

Rubble stone masonry is a common construction typology of historical city centres and vernacular architecture. While past earthquakes have shown that it is one of the most vulnerable masonry construction typologies, there are few experimental campaigns giv ...

In codes the drift capacity of unreinforced masonry (URM) walls is often estimated as a function of the failure mode and the aspect ratio. The empirical relationships are based on results from quasi-static cyclic tests on single URM walls, which were teste ...

This paper describes a pipeline for automatically generating level of detail (LOD) models (digital twins), specifically LOD2 and LOD3, from free-standing buildings. Our approach combines structure from motion (SfM) with deep-learning-based segmentation tec ...

This paper presents a benchmark exercise for the seismic assessment of unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings as a follow-up of a blind prediction test organized in the context of the European Conference of Earthquake Engineering Series. The blind prediction ...

Semantic segmentation with deep learning plays a crucial role in various fields, including civil engineering, particularly in tasks such as damage assessment and urban planning. This paper addresses the challenge of efficiently training deep learning model ...

When two bodies get into contact, only a small portion of the apparent area is actually involved in producing contact and friction forces because of the surface roughnesses. It is, therefore, crucial to accurately describe the morphology of rough surfaces, ...

Earthquake loads can induce out-of-plane deformations in thin reinforced concrete (RC) walls that may lead to member out-of-plane failure or cause a premature in-plane collapse. Such instability phenomena have been observed after the recent earthquakes in ...

This paper presents a mechanical model for the simulation of reinforced concrete (RC) wall boundary elements with lap splices, which builds on the tension chord model. The model is composed of an assembly of components, each one accounting for a different ...

Recent postearthquake missions have shown that reinforced concrete (RC) wall buildings can experience critical damage owing to lap splices, which led to a recent surge in experimental tests of walls with such constructional details. Most of the 16 wall tes ...

We use spherical cap harmonic (SCH) basis functions to analyse and reconstruct the morphology of scanned genus-0 rough surface patches with open edges. We first develop a novel one-to-one conformal mapping algorithm with minimal area distortion for paramet ...

This work evaluates the performance of a number of seismic assessment procedures when applied to a case study reinforced concrete (RC) wall building. The performance of each procedure is evaluated through its ability to accurately predict deformation deman ...

This paper presents a probabilistic seismic demand model (PSDM) as a relationship between intensity measures (IMs) and engineering demand parameters (EDPs) for the seismic assessment of two case studies resembling historical masonry buildings. The first on ...

Current procedures for the rapid inspection of buildings and infrastructure are subjective, time-consuming, and cumbersome to document, necessitating new technologies to automate the process and eliminate these shortcomings. Fortunately, recent development ...

Detailed micromodel simulations of stone masonry walls require as input a 3D mesh that represents a realistic arrangement of stones in the masonry wall. In this paper, we constructed the first 3D masonry microstructures to derive 2D and 3D finite or discre ...

Seismic assessments of historical masonry buildings are affected by several sources of epistemic uncertainty. These are mainly the material and the modelling parameters and the displacement capacity of the elements. Additional sources of uncertainty lie in ...

This data paper presents the quasi-static uniaxial cyclic tests of 24 reinforced concrete members, of which 22 feature lap splices and 2 are reference units with continuous reinforcement. The objective of the experimental program is to investigate the infl ...

In this paper, we propose a simple global optimisation algorithm inspired by Pareto’s principle. This algorithm samples most of its solutions within prominent search domains and is equipped with a self-adaptive mechanism to control the dynamic tightening o ...

While understanding the shear strength of stone masonry structures is important for the design and the mainte- nance, we still lack computational tools for predicting the strength as a function of the stone layout. Here we implement an end-to-end image bas ...

In several seismic countries, residential buildings are constructed using both reinforced concrete (RC) and unreinforced masonry (URM) walls. Despite their popularity, there is a general lack of knowledge concerning the seismic behaviour of such mixed syst ...
