An analytical model for real-time estimation of travel times along signalized arterials was developed. The application of the model on two arterial sites and comparisons of the estimated travel times with simulated and field data show that the model accura ...

Network-level road traffic control remains a challenging problem. Macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) based dynamical models of large-scale urban networks enable development of model predictive perimeter control methods, which represent an efficient cong ...

Aggregated network level modeling and control of traffic in urban networks have recently gained a lot of interest due to unpredictability of travel behaviors and high complexity of physical modeling in microscopic level. Recent research has shown the exist ...

Most perimeter control methods in literature are the model-based schemes. However, accurate modeling of the traffic flow system is hard and time-consuming. On the other hand, macroscopic traffic flow patterns show heavily similarity between days, and data ...

While cascade phenomena have been broadly studied by physicists, understanding and modeling of congestion propagation in large urban city networks still remains a challenge. Most efforts are mainly based on micro-simulations of link-level traffic dynamics ...

The paper presents a methodological framework that integrates different data-driven techniques in order to detect the different traffic flow regimes (free flow, congested conditions, and so on) observed in signalized arterials as well as the manner traffic ...

This tutorial describes methodologies to model and understand the collective behavior or different types of urban systems. It highlights under what physical properties the aggregated laws will provide reasonable description of congestion for single- and mu ...

The problem of traffic state estimation for large-scale urban networks modeled with MFD dynamics is studied here. Given a network partitioned in a number of regions, aggregated traffic dynamics describe the vehicle accumulation in each region, as well as t ...

Multi-modal interactions at the network-level remain unexplored due to the lack of highresolution data for all transportation modes involved. The current work investigates the effect of multi-modal interactions at space-mean network speed for each mode usi ...

Observations of traffic pairs of flow vs. density or occupancy for individual locations in freeways or arterials are usually scattered about an underlying curve. Recent observations from empirical data in arterial networks showed that in some cases by aggr ...

Microscopic traffic flow models can be distinguished in lane-based or lane-free depending on the degree of lane-discipline. This distinction holds true only if motorcycles are neglected in lane-based traffic. In cities, as opposed to highways, this is an o ...

An alternative approach for real-time network- wide traffic control in cities that has recently gained a lot of interest is perimeter flow control. The focus of the current work is to study two aspects that are not covered in the perimeter control literatu ...

As an emerging mode of urban transportation, autonomous mobility-on-demand (AMoD) systems show the potential in improving mobility in cities through timely and door-to-door services. However, the spatiotemporal imbalances between mobility demand and supply ...

Proper positioning of ride-sourcing drivers may improve vacant travel times, waiting times, and matching opportunities. Herein, we evaluate the potential repositioning response of drivers when provided a guidance based on estimates of their earnings in a s ...

In the Dial-a-Ride-Problem (DARP) a fleet of vehicles provides shared-ride services to users specifying their origin, destination, and preferred arrival time. Typically, the problem consists of finding minimum cost routes, satisfying operational constraint ...

As more people through different modes compete for the limited urban space that is set aside to serve transport, there is an increasing need to understand details of how this space is used and how it can be managed to improve accessibility for everyone. Ul ...

Collective transport has been seen for long as a proper solution to fight congestion. While collectivity has been successful with respect to subways, it is not the norm in road traffic. Dedicated Bus Lanes (DBL) have been proposed as a measure to reduce th ...

Perimeter control schemes proposed to alleviate congestion in large-scale urban networks usually assume perfect knowledge of the accumulation state together with current and future inflow demands, requiring information about the origins and destinations (O ...

In oversaturated urban traffic conditions when traffic demand exceeds capacity at signalised intersections, queues fail to clear during the allocated green times. Once a queue reaches the upstream intersection in an arterial, a queue spillback occurs that ...

High level of detail renders microscopic traffic models impractical for control purposes and local control schemes cannot coordinate actions over large scale heterogeneously congested urban networks. Developing efficient models and control methods for larg ...
