Nanocrystalline (Y0.7Gd0.3)(2)O-3 powder, synthetised via polymer complex solution method, was compacted into 25 pellets applying high pressures (173-867 MPa) for 30 s that were subsequently sintered at different temperatures (800-1400 degrees C) for 18 h. ...

We explored a synthesis route based on the polymer complex solution method for the production of the rare-earth doped Lu2O3 crystalline nanopowders. In this type of synthesis polyethylene glycol is used both as fuel for the combustion reaction, and as nucl ...

Spores of a number of clostridia' species, and their resistance to thermal treatment is a major concern for the food industry. Spore resistance to wet heat is related to the level of spore hydration, which is inversely correlated with the content of calciu ...

Uranium isotopic signatures can be harnessed to monitor the reductive remediation of subsurface contamination or to reconstruct paleo-redox environments. However, the mechanistic underpinnings of the isotope fractionation associated with U reduction remain ...

New red sesquioxide phosphor, Eu(3+)doped (Y0.5La0.5)(2)O-3, was synthesized in the form of nanocrystalline powder with excellent structural ordering in cubic bixbyite-type, and with nanoparticle sizes ranging between 10 and 20 nm. Photoluminescence measur ...

Zinc sulfide, both as a bulk material and in nanocrystalline form, is a valuable luminescent material with important applications. Doped ZnS nanoparticles of around 5 nm are the material of choice for optoelectronic applications running in the UV region ow ...

The microstructure of a Co38Ni33Al29 ferromagnetic shape memory alloy was determined by conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction studies together with advanced microscopy techniques and in situ Lorentz microscopy. Rod-like ...

One of the most challenging strategies to achieve tunable nanophotonic devices is to build robust nanohybrids with variable emission in the visible spectral range, while keeping the merits of pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). This goal is re ...

In situ Laue analysis during microcompression reveals plasticity in [0 0 1]-oriented, directionally solidified Mo alloy pillars to start with slip on the {1 1 2} < 1 1 1 > system having the highest Schmid factor followed by slip on the (1 1 0) plane contai ...

Meaningful interpretation of U isotope measurements relies on unraveling the impact of reduction mechanisms on the isotopic fractionation. Here, the isotope fractionation of hexavalent U [U(VI)] was investigated during its reductive mineralization by magne ...

Uranium (U) speciation was investigated in anoxically preserved porewater samples of a natural mountain wetland in Gola di Lago, Ticino, Switzerland. U porewater concentrations ranged from less than 1 mu g/L to tens of mu g/L, challenging the available ana ...

Uranium (U) is a ubiquitous element in the Earth's crust at similar to 2 ppm. In anoxic environments, soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) is reduced and immobilized. The underlying reduction mechanism is unknown but likely of critical importance to explain ...

Hundreds of tons of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition were used in previous armed conflicts in Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia/Kosovo. The majority (>90%) of DU penetrators miss their target and, if left in the environment, corrode in these postcon ...

This work explores the influence of annealing temperature on microstructure and optical characteristics of Eu3+ doped GdVO4 (0.5, 1, 2 and 3 at.% Eu3+) nanopowders produced via co-precipitation synthesis. Samples were annealed at different temperatures (30 ...

Visible-light emitting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)/organic hybrids have been successfully synthesized and promise to be a photon source to be used in future optoelectronic devices. The nanohybrids are "peapods" having sexithiophene molecules ins ...

Transmission electron microscopy was performed to investigate the microstructure and precipitates in the annealed Co38Ni33Al29 ferromagnetic shape memory alloy. Apart from the dendritic secondary phase in the austenite matrix, micron-sized (up to 100 μm) f ...

Original data pertaining to the manuscript 'Persistence of the isotopic signature of pentavalent uranium in magnetite' published in Environmental Science and Technology by Zezhen Pan, Yvonne Roebbert, Aaron Beck, Barbora Bartova, Tonya Vitova, Stefan Weyer ...

Reductive immobilization of uranium has been explored as a remediation strategy for the U-contaminated subsurface. Via the in situ biostimulation of microbial processes, hexavalent U is reduced to less soluble tetravalent species, which are immobilized wit ...

In this work we explored the possibility of obtaining nanocrystalline (Y0.5Lu0.5)2O3 powders, doped with europium and co-doped with praseodium, employing polymer complex solution synthesis. Polyethylene glycol, with average molecular weight 200, served bot ...

A surfactant-free synthesis of mesoporous and hollow silica nanoparticles is reported in which boron acts as the templating agent. Using such a simple and mild procedure as a treatment with water, the boron-rich phase is selectively removed, affording meso ...
