CONSPECTUS: Ligand development plays an essential role in the advance of homogeneous catalysis. Tridentate, meridionally coordinating ligands, commonly termed pincer ligands, have been established as a privileged class of ligands in catalysis because they ...

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are particularly well suited for storing the intermittent excess supply of renewable electricity; so-called “junk” electricity. Conventional RFBs are charged and discharged electrochemically, with electricity stored as chemical ...

Concerns over climate change resulting from accumulation of anthropogenic carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the uncertainty in the amount of recoverable fossil fuel reserves are driving forces for the development of renewable, carbon-neutral energy tech ...

Amorphous molybdenum sulfide films, prepared by electrodeposition, are a class of highly active catalysts for hydrogen evolution. The growth mechanism of the films and the true active species were unclear. Herein, we report a study of the growth and activa ...

[Fe]-hydrogenase, one of three types of hydrogenases, activates molecular hydrogen. Here, using DFT computations, we examine the electronic elements governing the binding of small ligands to a recently synthesized [Fe]-hydrogenase biomimic. Computed reacti ...

A bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mechanism, in which the energetically demanding step of the attack of hydroxide on a metal oxo unit is facilitated by a hydrogen atom transfer to a second site, has the potential to circumvent the scaling rela ...

[Fe]-hydrogenase has a single iron-containing active site that features an acylmethylpyridinol ligand. This unique ligand environment had yet to be reproduced in synthetic models; however the synthesis and reactivity of a new class of small molecule mimics ...

In drug discovery, the proportion of aliphatic carbons (C(sp(3))) and the presence of chiral carbons in organic molecules are positively correlated to their chance of clinical success. Although methods exist for the synthesis of chiral C(sp(3))-rich molecu ...

Interest in base metal catalysis motivates the development of Cu-based photoredox catalysts for organic synthesis. However, only a few Cu catalysts have been applied in photoredox reactions, the majority of which contain one or two 1,10-phenanthroline liga ...

[Fe]-hydrogenase hosts an iron-guanylylpyridinol (FeGP) cofactor. The FeGP cofactor contains a pyridinol ring substituted with GMP, two methyl groups, and an acylmethyl group. HcgC, an enzyme involved in FeGP biosynthesis, catalyzes methyl transfer from S- ...

Alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis is a promising technology for producing hydrogen using renewable energies. However, current AEM electrolyzers still employ noble-metal-containing electrocatalysts, or have significant overpotential ...

The electrochemical water splitting reaction can convert renewable electricity into clean hydrogen fuel. The efficiency of water splitting is limited to a large extent by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Numerous transition metal oxides have b ...

In the design of delivery strategies for anticancer therapeutics, the controlled release of intact cargo at the destined tumor and metastasis locations is of particular importance. To this end, stimuli-responsive chemical linkers have been extensively inve ...

Electrocatalytic upgrading of CO to value-added multi-carbon (C2+) compounds is a promising approach to efficient carbon utilization. However, current full-cell systems have low energy conversion effi-ciencies under practical conditions due to the requirem ...

Amorphous MoS3 particles are prepared using a simple chemical method. Several deposition techniques are developed to fabricate electrodes loaded with MoS3 particles. These electrodes are highly active for hydrogen evolution. The catalytically active specie ...

In the FeGP cofactor of [Fe]-hydrogenase, low-spin Fe-II is in complex with two CO ligands and a pyridinol derivative; the latter ligates the iron with a 6-acylmethyl substituent and the pyridinol nitrogen. A guanylylpyridinol derivative, 6-carboxymethyl-3 ...

Nickel iron oxyhydroxide is the benchmark catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium. Whereas the presence of Fe ions is essential to the high activity, the functions of Fe are currently under debate. Using oxygen isotope labeling ...

Efficient catalytic water splitting demands advanced catalysts to improve the slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Earth-abundant transition metal oxides show promising OER activity in alkaline media. However, most experimental information ...

Here we describe a deoxygenative trifluoromethylthiolation method that yields trifluoromethyl thioesters from readily available carboxylic acids. The method is built upon an "umpolung" strategy where triphenylphosphine is used to first activate an electrop ...

Catalytic lignosulfonate valorization is hampered by the in situ liberation of sulfur that ultimately poisons the catalyst. To overcome this limitation, metal sulfide catalysts were developed that are able to cleave the C-O bonds of lignosulfonate and are ...
