In an era of new developments in nanomaterials analysis enabled by the unprecedented spatial and energy resolutions of electron energy-loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM-EELS), it remains that the vast majority of work ...

Plasmonic antennas have enabled a wealth of applications that exploit tailored near-fields and radiative properties, further endowed by the bespoke interactions of multiple resonant building blocks. Specifically, when the interparticle distances are reduce ...

Combining the sol-gel method for fiber material production with the granulated silica method for preform assembly results in a robust method that offers a high degree of freedom regarding both the composition and the geometry of the produced fiber. Using t ...

Silicon (Si) and yttrium (Y) are believed to have a strong influence on functional properties of oxynitrides due to their effects in the growth process and incorporation in solid solution phases. It is worthwhile noting that the presence of these elements ...

The relationship between composition and plasmonic properties in noble metal nanoalloys is still largely unexplored. Yet, nanoalloys of noble metals, such as gold, with transition elements, such as iron, have unique properties and a number of potential app ...

We present the development of a new algorithm which combines state-of-the-art energy-dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy theory and a suitable machine learning formulation for the hyperspectral unmixing of scanning transmission electron microscope EDX spec ...

While plasmonic antennas composed of building blocks made of the same material have been thoroughly studied, recent investigations have highlighted the unique opportunities enabled by making compositionally asymmetric plasmonic systems. So far, mainly hete ...

The discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelate thin films has brought increased attention to the behavior of the doped perovskite phase. Despite this interest, the majority of existing studies pertain to hole-doped perovskite rare-ear ...

Electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR) is an attractive technology to reintegrate the anthropogenic CO2 back into the carbon cycle driven by a suitable catalyst. This study employs highly efficient multi-carbon (C2+) producing Cu2O nanocubes (NCs) decora ...

Recently, it has been shown that it is possible to tune the morphology of zinc oxide films deposited by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD) while preserving good electrical conductivity. Here a closer look is taken at films depos ...

The large variability of biological responses to beta-TCP implants reported in the literature could possibly be related to subtle differences in the beta-TCP crystal structure. The structure contains one partially occupied site Ca(4). In order to better un ...

We show a technique that images the intensity distribution and local state of polarization of the optical field of high-quality factor optical modes confined in dielectric planar photonic crystal nanocavities. Based on energy-loss spectroscopy of swift ele ...

We present two open-source Python packages: "electron spectro-microscopy"(espm) and "electron microscopy tables"(emtables). The espm software enables the simulation of scanning transmission electron microscopy energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy datacubes ...

The nature of the liquid-solid interface determines the characteristics of a variety of physical phenomena, including catalysis, electrochemistry, lubrication, and crystal growth. Most of the established models for crystal growth are based on macroscopic t ...

Transition-metal-doped ZnO is considered a promising candidate for applications in spintronics. Here, we developed it novel and versatile synthetic route for obtaining impurity-free Mn-doped zinc oxide (Zn1-xMnxO) materials witha well-controlled content of ...

One of the most widely used materials for bone graft substitution is β-Tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP;β- Ca3(PO4)2). beta-TCP is typically produced by sintering in air or vacuum. During this process, evaporation of phosphorus ...

The atomic configuration of phases and their interfaces is fundamental to materials design and engineering. Here, we unveil a transition metal oxide interface, whose formation is driven by energetic influences─epitaxial tensile strain versus oxygen octahed ...

The epitaxial growth of complex oxides enables the production of high-quality films, yet substrate choice is restricted to certain symmetry and lattice parameters, thereby limiting the technological applications of epitaxial oxides. In comparison, the deve ...

The microstructure and mechanical properties of hot rolled Fe-40 at-%Al based intermetallic alloys, with 0.1 at-%Zr and different additions of B (varying from 0.01 to 0.1 at-%), are characterised. The additions of Zr and B improve tensile properties at roo ...

Theory predicts that periodic photonic nanostructures should outperform their random counterparts in trapping light in solar cells. However, the current certified world-record conversion efficiency for amorphous silicon thin-film solar cells, which strongl ...
