Atomistic models for friction suffer from the severe length- and time-scale restrictions of molecular dynamics. Even when they yield good qualitative results, it is difficult to draw meaningful quantitative conclusions from them. In this paper, a novel app ...

Generating matching meshes for problems with complex boundaries is often an intricate process, and the use of non-matching meshes appears as an appealing solution. Yet, enforcing boundary conditions on non-matching meshes is not a straightforward process, ...

Roughness, defined as unevenness of material surfaces, plays an important role in determining how engineering components or natural objects interact with other bodies and their environment. The emergence of fractal roughness on natural and engineered surfa ...

The emergence of statistical complexity in frictional systems (where nonlinearity and dissipation are confined to an interface), manifested in broad distributions of various observables, is not yet understood. We study this problem in velocity-driven, homo ...

We employ a novel discrete element method (DEM) force formulation to simulate adhesive wear and assess the effects of material and loading parameters on the properties of the third-body layer (TBL) formed during sliding motion. The study emphasizes the rol ...

Since the early years of the linear elastic theory of fracture [linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM)], scientists have sought to understand and predict how fast cracks grow in a material or slip fronts propagate along faults. While shear cracks can tra ...

The dynamic initiation of sliding at planar interfaces between deformable and rigid solids is studied with particular focus on the speed of the slip front. Recent experimental results showed a close relation between this speed and the local ratio of shear ...

This paper analyzes fracturing in inhomogeneous media under dry and fully saturated conditions. We adopt a central force model with continuous damage to study avalanche behavior in a two-dimensional truss lattice undergoing dilation. Multiple fractures can ...

A novel methodology consisting of three hierarchical levels is proposed for the detection phase of contact mechanics simulations. The top level of the hierarchy uses kinematic information from the objects involved in the simulation to determine approximate ...

The failure of frictional interfaces - the process of frictional rupture - is widely assumed to feature crack-like properties, with far-reaching implications for various disciplines, ranging from engineering tribology to earthquake physics. An important co ...

When a frictional interface is subject to a localized shear load, it is often (experimentally) observed that local slip events propagate until they arrest naturally before reaching the edge of the interface. We develop a theoretical model based on linear e ...

We investigate shear and mixed mode fracture scenarios in inhomogeneous dry and fully saturated porous media with a 2D central force lattice model. For the fully saturated case we adopt the extended Biot's theory. The bars of the lattice break only under t ...

Engineering wear models are generally empirical and lack connections to the physical processes of debris generation at the nanoscale to microscale. Here, we thus analyze wear particle formation for sliding interfaces in dry contact with full and reduced ad ...

We study the mobility law of dislocations in aluminum as an important building block for the development of a multiscale method that couples an atomistic model with discrete dislocation dynamics in 3d (\eg CADD3d). Straight dislocations of arbitrary charac ...

We revisit the classic problem of an elastic solid with a two-dimensional wavy surface squeezed against an elastic flat half-space from infinitesimal to full contact. Through extensive numerical calculations and analytic derivations, we discover previously ...

A finite-element approach based on the first-order FE2 homogenisation technique is formulated to analyse the alkali-silica reaction-induced damage in concrete structures, by linking the concrete degradation at the macro-scale to the reaction extent at the ...

Induced seismicity caused by anthropogenic modification of the subsurface effective stress state has been observed in a number of industrial applications -- from hydrocarbon extraction (e.g., Groningen [1]), drilling waste-water disposal (e.g., [2]) to the ...

The process of frictional rupture, i.e., the failure of frictional systems, abounds in the technological and natural world around us, ranging from squealing car brake pads to earthquakes along geological faults. A general framework for understanding and in ...

We develop an analytical model of adhesive wear between two unlubricated rough surfaces, forming micro-contacts under normal load. The model is based on an energy balance and a crack initiation criteria. We apply the model to the problem of self-affine rou ...
