Atomistic models for friction suffer from the severe length- and time-scale restrictions of molecular dynamics. In this paper, a novel approach to quantify the scratching work and the energy associated with plastic activity is used. The approach is combine ...

A 2D plane-strain dynamically propagating crack under tensile loading is simulated with cohesive elements. Information of the main crack is extracted from a diffuse crack network with the use of graph properties. Micro-transgranular fracture properties are ...

The fabrication of high precision miniaturized components in micro- and nano-technologies requires a deep understanding of the physical mechanisms governing the nanomachining process. To aid with this need, the current article employs molecular dynamics to ...

To model rupture dynamics, a friction law must be assumed. Commonly used constitutive laws include slip- weakening laws which are characterized by a drop from static to dynamic frictional stress over a critical slip distance. Within this framework, the pre ...

The contact of solids with rough surfaces plays a fundamental role in physical phenomena such as friction, wear, sealing, and thermal transfer. However, its simulation is a challenging problem due to surface asperities covering a wide range of length-scale ...

Building on an analogy to ductile fracture mechanics, we quantify the size of debris particles created during adhesive wear. Earlier work suggested a linear relation between tangential work and wear debris volume, assuming that the debris size is proportio ...

The current research extends our previous work on brittle fragmentation of a one-dimensional bar [F. Zhou, J.-F. Molinari, K.T. Ramesh, A cohesive-model based fragmentation analysis: effects of strain rate and initial defects distribution, International Jo ...

Anyone who has ever broken a dish or a glass knows that the resulting fragments range from roughly the size of the object all the way down to indiscernibly small pieces: typical fragment size distributions of broken brittle materials follow a power law, an ...

The fragmentation of a brittle plate subjected to dynamic biaxial loading is investigated via numerical simulations. The aim is to extend our understanding of the dynamic processes affecting fragment size distributions. A scalable computational framework b ...

When two solids start rubbing together, frictional sliding initiates in the wake of slip fronts propagating along their surfaces in contact. This macroscopic rupture dynamics can be successfully mapped on the elastodynamics of a moving shear crack. However ...

Prediction of ground motion triggered by earthquakes is a prime concern for both the seismology community and geotechnical earthquake engineering one. The subfield occupied with such a problem is termed site response analysis (SRA), its one-dimensional fla ...

In this paper, we present a novel finite element model to simulate alkali-silica reaction in a realistic concrete meso-structure. Application of the internal ASR loading leads to the evolution of multiple deviated cracks and corresponding macroscopic expan ...

We investigate the persistence of micro-contacts between two elastic random rough surfaces by means of a simple model for quasi-static sliding. Contact clusters are calculated with the Boundary Element Method, then surfaces are repeatedly displaced to stud ...

When a crack interacts with material heterogeneities, its front distorts and adopts complex tortuous configurations that are reminiscent of the energy barriers encountered during crack propagation. As such, the study of crack front deformations is key to r ...

We present three-dimensional finite-element simulations showing the propagation of slip fronts at striped heterogeneous interfaces. The heterogeneous area consists of alternating stripes of weaker and stronger frictional properties, which is equivalent to ...

We present the application of digital filters to split the energy spectrum of an atomistic zone simulated with molecular dynamics into low and high energy components. After a brief background on digital filters, we describe the procedure used to select a c ...

The influence of material heterogeneities is studied in the context of dynamic failure. We consider a pre-strained plate problem, the homogeneous case of which has been widely studied both experimentally and numerically. This setup is used to isolate the e ...

The wear volume is known to keep increasing during frictional processes, and Archard notably proposed a model to describe the probability of wear particle formation upon asperity collision in a two-body contact configuration. While this model is largely ad ...

We address the simulation of dynamic crack propagation in brittle materials using a regularized phase-field description, which can also be interpreted as a damage-gradient model. Benefiting from a variational framework, the dynamic evolution of the mechani ...

We employ a finite element framework, coupled to cohesive elements, to model material decohesion of a uniformly expanding ring. Our study focuses on the average fragment mass, the distribution of fragment masses, and the heaviest fragments. The computed fr ...
