Understanding the unfolding of friction between the tool and the generated chip is of fundamental importance to nanometric machining processes. To this end, this paper investigates the influence of tool geometry, lattice orientation, machining velocity and ...

One of the key points to better understand the origins of friction is to know how two surfaces in contact adhere to one another. In this paper we present molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of two aluminium bodies in contact, exposed to a range of normal l ...

The detachment of material in an adhesive wear process is driven by a fracture mechanism which is controlled by a critical length-scale. Previous efforts in multi-asperity wear modeling have applied this microscopic process to rough elastic contact. Howeve ...

Model-free data-driven computational mechanics (DDCM) is a new paradigm for simulations in solid mechanics. The modeling step associated to the definition of a material constitutive law is circumvented through the introduction of an abstract phase space in ...

Due to the current interest in nanotechnology, there is a strong desire for comprehensive knowledge on the underlying mechanisms governing the nanometric machining process. This article employs molecular dynamics to study nanomachining in ductile crystalli ...

Wear is the inevitable damage process of surfaces during sliding contact. According to the well-known Archard’s wear law, the wear volume scales with the real contact area and as a result is proportional to the load. Decades of wear experiments, however, s ...

In this review, we discuss our recent advances in modeling adhesive wear mechanisms using coarse-grained atomistic simulations. In particular, we present how a model pair potential reveals the transition from ductile shearing of an asperity to the formatio ...

The detection phase in computational contact mechanics can be subdivided into a global search and a local detection. When potential contact is detected by the former, a rigorous local detection determines which surface elements come or may come in contact ...

Tamaas: a library for elastic-plastic contact of periodic rough surfaces", published in the Journal of Open Source Softwares describes the free and open-source library Tamaas. More than five years in the making, Tamaas is a high performance C++/Python libr ...

We discuss the multiscale modeling of a granular material trapped between continuum elastic domains. The amorphous granular region, usually termed “gouge,” is under high confinement pressure, to represent the loading of faults at depth. We model the granul ...

Current engineering wear models are often based on empirical parameters rather than built upon physical considerations. Here, we look for a physical description of adhesive wear at the microscale, at which the interaction between two surfaces comes down to ...

The purpose of this paper is to present a novel approach to study sliding friction by the use of 3D multiscale coupling techniques. We highlight the difficulties of using multiscale schemes that couple molecular dynamics (MD) with finite elements to perfor ...

Surface roughness is a key factor when it comes to friction and wear, as well as to other physical properties. These phenomena are controlled by mechanisms acting at small scales, in which the topography of apparently flat surfaces is revealed. Roughness i ...

Friction and wear depend critically on surface roughness and its evolution with time. An accurate control of roughness is essential to the performance and durability of virtually all engineering applications. At geological scales, roughness along tectonic ...

Sliding contact between solids leads to material detaching from their surfaces in the form of debris particles, a process known as wear. According to the well-known Archard wear model, the wear volume (i.e. the volume of detached particles) is proportional ...

The adhesive wear process remains one of the least understood areas of mechanics. While it has long been established that adhesive wear is a direct result of contacting surface asperities, an agreed upon understanding of how contacting asperities lead to w ...

The transition from quasi-static slip growth to dynamic rupture propagation constitutes one possible scenario to describe earthquake nucleation. If this transition is rather well understood for homogeneous faults, how the friction properties of multiscale ...

Adhesion between two bodies is a key parameter in wear processes. At the macroscale, strong adhesive bonds are known to lead to high wear rates, as observed in clean metal-on-metal contact. Reducing the strength of the interfacial adhesion is then desirabl ...

Volume increase between the reactants and the products of alkali silica reaction could reach up to 100%. Taking place inside the aggregates, ASR imposes internal pressure on the surrounding material. In the current paper, we study the possibility of crack ...
