Spangolite, Cu6Al(SO4)(OH)12Cl·3H2O, is a hydrated layered copper sulfate mineral. The Cu2+ ions of each layer form a systematically depleted triangular lattice which approximates a maple leaf lattice. We present details of the crystal structure, which sug ...

We demonstrate quantum critical scaling for an S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound Cu(C4H4N2)(NO3)(2) in a magnetic field around saturation, by analyzing previously reported magnetization [Y. Kono et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 037202 (2015) ...

Resonant absorption can be used as a filter for high energy neutron spectroscopy. Here we report the transmission of eight thin foil filters: erbium, indium, iridium, dysprosium, hafnium, gadolinium, cadmium and samarium, measured using neutron time-of-fli ...

Exotic quantum phases, arising from a complex interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, are of immense interest to a wide research community. A well-known example of such an entangled behavior is the Jahn-Teller effect, where the l ...

The surface of a material is not only a window into its bulk physical properties, but also hosts unique phenomena important for understanding the properties of a solid as a whole. Surface sensitive techniques, like ARPES (Angle-resolved photoemission spect ...

We report the synthesis of single crystals of a novel layered iridate Ba21Ir9O43 and present the crystallographic, transport, and magnetic properties of this material. The compound has a hexagonal structure with two iridium oxide layers stacked along the c ...

We present a study of the model spin-glass LiHo0.5Er0.5F4 using simultaneous ac susceptibility, magnetization, and magnetocaloric effect measurements along with small angle neutron scattering ( SANS) at sub-Kelvin temperatures. All measured bulk quantities ...

We study the dynamics and interactions of the critical fluctuations of the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe3O4) in the pretransition region by means of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a natural single crystal. We find that a Delta(5) mode int ...

We report the results of a combined muon-spin rotation and neutron-scattering study on La2-xSrxCuO4 in the vicinity of the so-called 1/8 anomaly. Application of a magnetic field drives the system toward a magnetically ordered spin-density-wave state, which ...

Dinuclear clathrochelate complexes with two, three, four, or five cyano groups in the ligand periphery were prepared following two distinct synthetic strategies: (a) zinc(II)- or cobalt(II)-templated polycondensation reactions of CN-functionalized arylboro ...

We report magnetic properties of a 3d(9) (Cu2+) magnetic insulator Cu2OSO4 measured on both powder and single crystal. The magnetic atoms of this compound form layers whose geometry can be described either as a system of chains coupled through dimers or as ...

We present an experimental investigation of the magnetic structure in a tetramer system SeCuO3 using neutron powder-diffraction and nuclear resonance techniques. We establish a commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering with a propagation vector k = (0, 0, 1) ...

The earliest ideas of the polaron recognized that the coupling of an electron to ionic vibrations would affect its apparent mass and could effectively immobilize the carrier (self-trapping). We discuss how these basic ideas have been generalized to recogni ...

Topological spin textures such as skyrmions hold high potential for use as magnetically active elements in diverse near-future applications. While skyrmions in metallic multilayers attract great attention in this context, unleashing the myriad potential of ...

Paramagnetic correlations in the magnetic material Yb2Ti2O7 have been investigated via neutron scattering, revealing a [111] rod of scattering intensity. Assuming interactions between the Yb3+ ions composed of all symmetry-allowed nearest neighbor exchange ...

Trigonal tellurium, a small-gap semiconductor with pronounced magneto-electric and magneto-optical responses, is among the simplest realizations of a chiral crystal. We have studied by spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy its unconventional ...

Inelastic neutron scattering, susceptibility, and high-field magnetization identify LiCuVO4 as a nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic, next-nearest-neighbour frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional helimagnet, which is largely influenced by quantum fluctuations. Comp ...

We study the zero-point and thermal ionic motion in La2CuO4 by means of high-resolution neutron-diffraction experiments. Our results demonstrate anisotropic motion of O and, to a lesser extent, Cu ions, both consistent with the structure of coupled CuO6 oc ...

Neutron spectroscopy and diffuse neutron scattering on herbertsmithite [ZnCu3(OH)(6)Cl-2], a near-ideal realization of the s=1/2 kagome antiferromagnet, reveal the hallmark property of a quantum spin liquid: instantaneous short-ranged antiferromagnetic cor ...

High field magnetization measurements in pulsed fields up to 65 T have been performed on FePS3, which is nominally a good example of a two-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice. Measurements with the field parallel to the moment dir ...
