Developments in modern neutron spectroscopy have led to typical sample sizes decreasing from few cm to several mm in diameter samples. We demonstrate how small samples together with the right choice of analyser and detector components makes distance collim ...

Using polarized neutron scattering we establish that the magnetic order in La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 is either (i) one dimensionally modulated and collinear, consistent with the stripe model or (ii) two dimensionally modulated with a novel noncollinear structu ...

A flexible, combined, radial collimator and beryllium (Be) filter have been designed and manufactured at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland. The Be is integrated in the radial collimator by placing thin Be slices between the collimator lamellas. ...

We investigate by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering the magnetic excitations in thin films of tetragonal CuO. We identify a spin wave excitation, dispersing on two cupratelike antiferromagnetic sublattices. Its energy at the boundary of the Brillouin zon ...

Detailed spin-wave spectra of magnetoelectric LiNiPO4 have been measured by neutron scattering at low temperatures in the commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic (AF) phase below T-N=20.8 K. An anomalous shallow minimum is observed at the modulation vector of t ...

The discovery of unconventional superconductivity in a broad class of iron-based materials invoked extensive research on the corresponding compounds of other transition metals. For instance, BaNi2P2 exhibits a superconducting transition with a critical tem ...

Inelastic X-ray scattering with meV energy resolution (IXS) is an ideal tool to measure collective excitations in solids and liquids. In non-resonant scattering condition, the cross-section is strongly dominated by lattice vibrations (phonons). However, it ...

We investigated the electronic and magnetic ground states of the cage compound FeGa3 under the presence of Fe antisite disorder (namely as Fe0.258Ga0.742) by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS), magnetization and electrical resistivity. Ou ...

Using superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry techniques, we have studied the change in magnetization versus applied ac electric field, i.e. the magnetoelectric (ME) susceptibility dM/dE, in the chiral-lattice ME insulator Cu2OSeO3. Measur ...

The simultaneous application of high magnetic fields and high pressures for controlling magnetic ground states is important for testing our understanding of many-body quantum theory. However, the implementation for neutron scattering experiments presents a ...

Neutron scattering from single crystals has been used to determine the magnetic structure and magnon dynamics of FePS3, an S = 2 Ising-like quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet with a honeycomb lattice. The magnetic structure has been confirmed to have a ...

In the rapidly expanding field of topological materials there is growing interest in systems whose topological electronic band features can be induced or controlled by magnetism. Magnetic Weyl semimetals, which contain linear band crossings near the Fermi ...

The compound KTi(SO4)(2)center dot H2O was recently reported as a quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 compound with competing antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J(1) and next-nearest-neighbor exchange J(2) along the chain with a frustration ratio alpha ...

The nature of the electronic ground state of Ba2IrO4 has been addressed using soft x-ray absorption and inelastic scattering techniques in the vicinity of the oxygen K edge. From the polarization and angular dependence of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS ...

The heavy fermion compound Ce3Pd20Si6 displays unconventional quantum criticality as the lower of two consecutive phase transitions is fully suppressed by magnetic field. Here we report on the effects of pressure as an additional tuning parameter. Specific ...

The novel iridate Ba8Al2IrO14 was prepared as single crystals by self-flux method, thereby providing a rare example of an all-Ir(VI) compound that can be synthesized under ambient pressure conditions. The preparation of all-Ir6+ iridate without using tradi ...

Based on high-field 31P nuclear magnetic resonance experiments and accompanying numerical calculations, it is argued that in the frustrated S=1/2 ladder compound BiCu2PO6 a field-induced soliton lattice develops above a critical field of μ0Hc1=20.96(7) T. ...

We address the degeneracy of the ground state multiplet on the 5d(1) Re6+ ion in double perovskite Ba2MgReO6 using a combination of specific heat measurements and density functional calculations. For Ba2MgReO6, two different ground state multiplets have pr ...

We measured the momentum dependence of magnetic excitations in the model spin-1/2 2D antiferromagnetic insulator Sr2CuO2Cl2 (SCOC). We identify a single-spin-wave feature and a multimagnon continuum, with different polarization dependences. The spin waves ...

The spin waves in single crystals of the layered van der Waals antiferromagnet CoPS3 have been measured using inelastic neutron scattering. The data show four distinct spin wave branches with large (>14 meV) energy gaps at the Brillouin zone center indicat ...
