We present a micro-patterned silicon structure that enables the preparation of a substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and pre-concentration of the analyte molecules. The structure is designed to produce a hydrophobicity gradient. As a res ...

Current trends in artificial intelligence toward larger models demand a rethinking of both hardware and algorithms. Photonics-based systems offer high-speed, energy-efficient computing units, provided algorithms are designed to exploit photonics' unique st ...

Confocal laser-scanning microscopy is a well-known optical imaging method where a pinhole is used in the illumination and detection pathways of a normal microscope, in order to selectively excite and detect a particular focal volume. The advantage of this ...

In this work we demonstrate 3D imaging using two-photon excitation through a 20 cm long multimode optical fiber (MMF) of 350 mu m diameter. The imaging principle is similar to single photon fluorescence through a MMF, except that a focused femtosecond puls ...

The application of electrical fields within a microfluidic channel enables many forms of manipulation necessary for lab-on-a-chip devices. Patterning electrodes inside the microfluidic channel generally requires multi-step optical lithography. Here, we uti ...

Inner ear imaging is important for the assessment of hearing disorders. A major cause of hearing loss is the damage to the sensory hair cells, which are located inside the cochlea, a spiral-shaped bone in the inner ear. Imaging of intracochear hair cells i ...

The state of the art for high resolution three-dimensional light-based additive manufacturing mainly relies on two-photon polymerization. It consists of focusing and scanning a femtosecond laser beam on a photosensitive resin to initiate crosslinking and f ...

Methods to manipulate and visualize isolated DNA and oligonucleotide strands are important for investigation of their biophysics as well as their interactions with proteins. Herein, we report such a method by combining a block copolymer surface functionali ...

We report a novel grid based Optofluidic Microscope (OFM) method where a closely spaced 2D grid of nanoapertures (diameter = 100 nm, separation = 2.5 mu m) provided patterned illumination. We achieved a one-to-one mapping of the light transmissions through ...

The process of second harmonic generation (SHG) has a unique property of forming a sharp optical contrast between noncentrosymmetric crystalline materials and other types of material, which is a highly valuable asset for contrast microscopy. The coherent s ...

We show that when a small amount of heat is added close to a liquid-vapor interface of a captive gas bubble in a microchannel, interphase mass-transfer through the bubble can occur in a controlled manner with only a slight change in the temperature of the ...

The last decade has seen the development of a wide set of tools, such as wavefront shaping, computational or fundamental methods, that allow us to understand and control light propagation in a complex medium, such as biological tissues or multimode fibers. ...

Additive manufacturing has established itself as a popular and powerful tool in electrochemistry research and development. In this short review, we focus on the latest results in both 3D printing and electrochemistry communities that could potentially bene ...

We report Stimulated Emission Depletion (STED) imaging of green fluorescent nanodiamonds containing Nitrogen-Vacancy-Nitrogen (NVN) centers with a resolution of 70 nm using a commercial microscope. Nanodiamonds have been demonstrated to have the potential ...

A device having a water vapor microelectrolyzer cell including microstructured parallel electrodes where the water splitting reactions can take place, the microstructured electrodes being covered by a thin layer of solid-state ion conducting material to al ...

We demonstrate, to the best of our knowledge, the first spatiotemporally mode-locked dispersion-managed fiber laser. The fiber oscillator, which includes a 250 modes multimode fiber section, generates 20 nJ pulses centered at 1034 nm with 730 mW average po ...

Cornea functions as an outermost lens and plays an important role in vision. For cornea diagnosis and treatment, a microscopic imaging system with cellular resolution and high eye safety is strongly desired. Recently, the cell morphology of corneal epithel ...

Optical neural networks are expected to be hybrid systems for the foreseeable future combining optics and electronics. The linear portion of the system, consisting of the weighted interconnections between the neurons, can be realized optically. The nonline ...

We report an optical switch based on a diffraction grating by combining PDMS microstructures with a photo-responsive Nematic Liquid Crystal (NLC). The grating was realized via replica molding and was subsequently coated with a thin SiO layer. SiO induced a ...

Wavefront shaping through multimode fibers has many interesting applications, such as micromanipulation and endoscopy, where the small diameter of fibers is an advantage in terms of miniaturization. However, pattern projection can suffer from deleterious i ...
