Peat layers within alluvial sediments are considered effective arsenic (As) sinks under reducing conditions due to the binding of As(III) to thiol groups in natural organic matter (NOM) and the formation of As-bearing sulfide phases. However, their possibl ...

The impact of seasonal fluctuations linked to monsoon and irrigation generates redox oscillations in the subsurface, influencing the release of arsenic (As) in aquifers. Here, the biogeochemical control on As mobility was investigated in batch experiments ...

Desulfotomaculum kuznetsovii is a moderately thermophilic member of the polyphyletic spore-forming genus Desulfotomaculum in the family Peptococcaceae. This species is of interest because it originates from deep subsurface thermal mineral water at a depth ...

Investigation of bacterial chromate tolerance has mostly focused on strains originating from polluted sites. In the present study, we isolated 33 chromate tolerant strains from diverse environments harbouring varying concentrations of chromium (Cr). All of ...

Uranium isotopic signatures in the rock record are utilized as a proxy for past redox conditions on Earth. However, these signatures display significant variability that complicates the interpretation of specific redox conditions. Using the model uranium-r ...

Iron is essential for most living organisms. In addition, its biogeochemical cycling influences important processes in the geosphere (e.g., the mobilization or immobilization of trace elements and contaminants). The reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) can be ca ...

Microbial life is widespread in the terrestrial subsurface and present down to several kilometers depth, but the energy sources that fuel metabolism in deep oligotrophic and anoxic environments remain unclear. In the deep crystalline bedrock of the Fennosc ...

The prevalent formation of noncrystalline U(IV) species in the subsurface and their enhanced susceptibility to reoxidation and remobilization, as compared to crystalline uraninite, raise concerns about the long-term sustainability of the bioremediation of ...

Desulfotomaculum reducens MI-1 is a Gram-positive, sulfate-reducing bacterium also capable of reducing several metals, among which is Fe(III). Very limited knowledge is available on the potential mechanism(s) of metal reduction among Gram-positive bacteria ...

Over the past two decades, metagenomics has greatly expanded our understanding of microbial phylogenetic and metabolic diversity. However, most microbial taxa remain uncultured, hindering research and biotechnological applications. Isolating environmental ...

Shewanella oneidensis produces an extensive electron transfer network that results in metabolic flexibility. A large number of c-type cytochromes are expressed by S. oneidensis and these function as the fundamental electron transport chain proteins. Althou ...

Knowledge of paleo-redox conditions in the Earth's history provides a window into events that shaped the evolution of life on our planet. The role of microbial activity in paleo-redox processes remains unexplored due to the inability to discriminate biotic ...

Oxidative dissolution controls uranium release to (sub)oxic pore waters from biogenic uraninite produced by natural or engineered processes, such as bioremediation Laboratory studies show that uraninite dissolution is profoundly influenced by dissolved oxy ...

Hydrogen gas (H2) may be produced by the anoxic corrosion of steel components in underground structures, such as geological repositories for radioactive waste. In such environments, hydrogen was shown to serve as an electron donor for autotrophic bacteria. ...

Original data pertaining to the manuscript 'Persistence of the isotopic signature of pentavalent uranium in magnetite' published in Environmental Science and Technology by Zezhen Pan, Yvonne Roebbert, Aaron Beck, Barbora Bartova, Tonya Vitova, Stefan Weyer ...

The reduction of soluble hexavalent uranium to tetravalent uranium can be catalyzed by bacteria and minerals. The end-product of this reduction is often the mineral uraninite, which was long assumed to be the only product of U(VI) reduction. However, recen ...

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are used increasingly in consumer products for their antimicrobial properties. This increased use raises ecological concern because of the release of AgNPs into the environment. Once released, zero-valent silver may be oxidized ...
