The deep terrestrial subsurface remains an environment where there is limited understanding of the extant microbial metabolisms. At Olkiluoto, Finland, a deep geological repository is under construction for the final storage of spent nuclear fuel. It is th ...

The cumulative effects of periodic redox cycling on the mobility of As, Fe, and S from alluvial sediment to groundwater were investigated in bioreactor experiments. Two particular sediments from the alluvial floodplain of the Mekong Delta River were invest ...

Microbial methylation of arsenic impacts both the toxicity and fate of this environmental contaminant, and is an important component of its biogeochemical cycle. This transformation occurs in flooded paddy fields where soil microorganisms can produce dimet ...

P>Spore-forming, Gram-positive sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) represent a group of SRB that dominates the deep subsurface as well as niches in which resistance to oxygen and dessication is an advantage. Desulfotomaculum reducens strain MI-1 is one of the ...

The genus Desulfotomaculum, belonging to the Firmicutes, comprises strictly anaerobic and endospore-forming bacteria capable of dissimilatory sulfate reduction. These microorganisms are metabolically versatile and are widely distributed in the environment. ...

Meaningful interpretation of U isotope measurements relies on unraveling the impact of reduction mechanisms on the isotopic fractionation. Here, the isotope fractionation of hexavalent U [U(VI)] was investigated during its reductive mineralization by magne ...

Microbially-mediated methylation of arsenic (As) plays an important role in the As biogeochemical cycle, particularly in rice paddy soils where methylated As, generated microbially, is translocated into rice grains. The presence of the arsenite (As(III)) m ...

Uranium (U) speciation was investigated in anoxically preserved porewater samples of a natural mountain wetland in Gola di Lago, Ticino, Switzerland. U porewater concentrations ranged from less than 1 mu g/L to tens of mu g/L, challenging the available ana ...

Uranium (U) is a ubiquitous element in the Earth's crust at similar to 2 ppm. In anoxic environments, soluble hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) is reduced and immobilized. The underlying reduction mechanism is unknown but likely of critical importance to explain ...

It has generally been assumed that the bioreduction of hexavalent uranium in groundwater systems will result in the precipitation of immobile uraninite (UO2). In order to explore the form and stability of uranium immobilized under these conditions, we intr ...

Chromate is one of the major anthropogenic contaminants on Earth. Leucobacter chromiiresistens is a highly chromate-resistant strain, tolerating chromate concentrations in LB medium of up to 400 mM. In response to chromate stress, L. chromiiresistens forms ...

A genome and physiological comparison was made of the type strains of Desulfotomaculum species belonging to subgroup 1a and of 'Desulfotomaculum reducens' strain MI-1. Phenotypically, 'Desulfotomaculum reducens' strain MI-1 can be distinguished from the ot ...

Hundreds of tons of depleted uranium (DU) ammunition were used in previous armed conflicts in Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia/Kosovo. The majority (>90%) of DU penetrators miss their target and, if left in the environment, corrode in these postcon ...

The biological reduction of soluble U(VI) complexes to form immobile U(IV) species has been proposed to remediate contaminated sites. It is well established that multiheme c-type cytochromes (MHCs) are key mediators of electron transfer to aqueous phase U( ...

Desulfotomaculum reducens strain MI-1 is a Gram-positive, sulfate-reducing bacterium also capable of reducing Fe(III). Metal reduction in Gram-positive bacteria is poorly understood. Here, we investigated Fe(III) reduction with lactate, a non-fermentable s ...

Bile acids, which are synthesized from cholesterol by the liver, are chemically transformed along the intestinal tract by the gut microbiota, and the products of these transformations signal through host receptors, affecting overall host health. These tran ...

Desulfotomaculum ruminis Campbell and Postgate 1965 is a member of the large genus Desulfotomaculum which contains 30 species and is contained in the family Peptococcaceae. This species is of interest because it represents one of the few sulfate-reducing b ...
