Reductive immobilization of uranium has been explored as a remediation strategy for the U-contaminated subsurface. Via the in situ biostimulation of microbial processes, hexavalent U is reduced to less soluble tetravalent species, which are immobilized wit ...

A sealed container for the geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel and vitrified high-level waste is the only component of a deep geological repository that provides complete containment of radionuclides. As such, attention is focused on its lifetime. Th ...

Clay rocks are being considered for radioactive waste disposal, but relatively little is known about the impact of microbes on the long-term safety of geological repositories. Thus, a more complete understanding of microbial community structure and functio ...

Reduction of uranyl(VI) to U-V and to U-IV is important in uranium environmental migration and remediation processes. The anaerobic reduction of a uranyl U-VI complex supported by a picolinate ligand in both organic and aqueous media is presented. The [(UO ...

The two-step electron transfer during bacterial reduction of UVI to UIV is typically accompanied by mass-independent fractionation of the 238U and 235U isotopes, whereby the heavy isotope accumulates in the reduced product. However, the role of the UV inte ...

Uranium L-III-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy is often used to probe the oxidation state and coordination of uranium in environmental samples, and micrometre-sized beams can be used to spatially map the distribution of uranium relative to other elements ...

Tetravalent uranium is commonly assumed to form insoluble species, resulting in the immobilization of uranium under reducing conditions. Here we present the first report of mobile U(IV)-bearing colloids in the environment, bringing into question this commo ...
