Specialized glucosensing neurons are present in the hypothalamus, some of which neighbor the median eminence, where the blood–brain barrier has been reported leaky. A leaky blood–brain barrier implies high tissue glucose levels and obviates a role for endo ...

The only currently available method to measure brain glycogen in vivo is C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Incorporation of C-13-labeled glucose (Glc) is necessary to allow glycogen measurement, but might be affected by turnover changes. Our aim was to measure glycog ...

While chronic hypoglycaemia has been reported to increase unidirectional glucose transport across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and to increase GLUT1 expression at the endothelium, the effect on steady-state brain d-glucose and brain glycogen content is cu ...

Glioma models have provided important insights into human brain cancers. Among the investigative tools, MRI has allowed their characterization and diagnosis. In this study, we investigated whether diffusion MRI might be a useful technique for early detecti ...

The treatments for ischemic stroke can only be administered in a narrow time-window. However, the ischemia onset time is unknown in ~30% of stroke patients (wake-up strokes). The objective of this study was to determine whether MR spectra of ischemic brain ...

Hippocampus plays a critical role in linking brain energetics and behavior typically associated to stress exposure. In this study, we aimed to simultaneously assess excitatory and inhibitory neuronal metabolism in mouse hippocampus in vivo by applying (18) ...

Glucose is a major energy fuel for the brain, however, less is known about specificities of its metabolism in distinct cerebral areas. Here we examined the regional differences in glucose utilization between the hypothalamus and hippocampus using in vivo i ...

It is well established that lactate can be used as an energy substrate by the brain by conversion to pyruvate and a subsequent oxidation in the mitochondria. Knowing the need for readily metabolizable substrates directly after ischemia and the protective e ...

The hypothalamus plays an essential role in the central nervous system of mammals by among others regulating glucose homeostasis, food intake, temperature, and to some extent blood pressure. Assessments of hypothalamic metabolism using, e.g. 1H MRS in mous ...

Glucose transporter 2 (Glut2)-positive cells are sparsely distributed in brain and play an important role in the stimulation of glucagon secretion in response to hypoglycemia. We aimed to determine if Glut2-positive cells can influence another response to ...

Proton NMR spectroscopy is emerging from translational and preclinical neuroscience research as an important tool for evidence based diagnosis and therapy monitoring. It provides biomarkers that offer fingerprints of neurological disorders even in cases wh ...

Alterations in the hepatic lipid content (HLC) and fatty acid composition are associated with disruptions in whole body metabolism, both in humans and in rodent models, and can be non-invasively assessed by (1) H-MRS in vivo. We used (1) H-MRS to character ...

C57BL/6 mice are the most widely used strain of laboratory mice. Using in vivo proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H MRS), we have repeatedly observed an abnormal neurochemical profile in the brains of both wild-type and ge ...

After ischemic stroke, the ischemic damage to brain tissue evolves over time and with an uneven spatial distribution. Early irreversible changes occur in the ischemic core, whereas, in the penumbra, which receives more collateral blood flow, the damage is ...

We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of neurochemical profiling of embryonic mouse brain developments in utero and to seek potential in vivo evidence of an energy shift in a mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 1 (MPC1) deficient mouse model. C57BL/6 embryonic m ...

An essential feature of magnetic resonance (MR) probes for magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy is the ability to generate uniform B-1(+) excitation in a volume of interest. When the magnetic field strength is increased, leading to an increase in re ...

Diffusion-weighted H-1-MRS (DW-MRS) allows for noninvasive investigation of the cellular compartmentalization of cerebral metabolites. DW-MRS applied to the congenital portal systemic shunt (PSS) mouse brain may provide specific insight into alterations of ...

With the use of localized 13C MRS in conjunction with [1-(13)C]-D-glucose infusion, it is possible to study brain glycogen metabolism in vivo. The purpose of this study was to validate in vivo 13C MRS measurements by comparing them with results from a stan ...
