Discharges of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and stormwater are recognized as an important source of environmental contamination. However, the harsh sewer environment and particular hydraulic conditions during rain events reduce the reliability of traditi ...

A numerical study was conducted to investigate the influence of tides on the fate of terrestrially-derived BTEX discharging through an unconfined aquifer to coastal waters. Previous studies have revealed that tide-induced seawater circulations create an ac ...

We explore selected aspects of J.-Y. Parlange’s contributions to hydrological transport of solutes and sediments, including both the laboratory and field scales. At the laboratory scale, he provided numerous approximations for solute transport accounting f ...

The solution to the Green and Ampt infiltration equation is expressible in terms of the Lambert W-1 function. Approximations for Green and Ampt infiltration are thus derivable from approximations for the W-1 function and vice versa. An infinite family of a ...

To understand better how tides affect the soil conditions of salt marshes, pore-water flow in a modeled 3-D creek-marsh system was simulated under the influence of both monochromatic and spring-neap tides. In analyzing the simulation results, we examined s ...

Systematic operation of water resources systems requires rules that consider the uncertainties affecting system performance. Here, stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) is used to structure and solve a full-scale surface and groundwater conjunctive use mode ...

Most popular urban hydrological model used in research and engineering (e.g. MOUSE, SWMM, MUSIC,P8) are spatially distributed with linknode drainage network. If some of them (e.g. PURPS, RUNQUAL, SLAMM, StormTac and WBM) treat the catchment in a lumped fas ...

Combining field measurements, 3‐D numerical modeling, and Lagrangian particle tracking, we investigated wind‐driven, Ekman‐type coastal upwelling during the weakly stratified winter period 2017/2018 in Lake Geneva, Western Europe's largest lake (max. depth ...

Chlorinated solvents form a significant part of groundwater contamination worldwide. They are difficult to remove via physical means, and anaerobic source-zone remediation based on provision of fermentable e-donor is an attractive clean-up dechlorination o ...

Relatively high concentrations of micropollutants in municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents underscore the necessity to develop additional treatment steps prior to discharge of treated wastewater. Microorganisms that produce unspecific oxida ...

Ponding tests were conducted in the Shiyang River Basin in Northwest China to assess canal leakage characteristics. Four anti-seepage constructions (concrete lining, pebble lining, clay lining plus compacted canal bed, compacted canal bed only) were perfor ...

Artificial freshwater recharge is commonly used to mitigate seawater intrusion and restore salinized aquifers in coastal zones. While the temperature of recharged freshwater often differs from that of aquifers, effects of temperature differences on water f ...

Hyporheic exchange is affected by bedform geometry, which induces complex flow paths within the bedform. Additional factors that influence flow and solute transport in the hyporheic zone are layered profile sediments and density-driven flow. This study exp ...

Two laboratory flume experiments on the effect of surface rock fragments on precipitation-driven soil erosion yields were carried out. The total sediment concentration, the concentration of seven individual size classes and the flow discharge were measured ...

Nitrifying wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are more efficient than non-nitrifying WWTPs to remove several micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides. This may be related to the activity of nitrifying organisms, such as ammonia-oxidizing bac ...

Hairsine and Rose developed a mechanistic, one-dimensional, precipitation-driven erosion model that, since its appearance, has been validated by several sets of experimental results. The model allows any sediment particle to be present in one of three zone ...

The Riparian Soil Model (RSM) of Brovelli et al. (Sci. Total Environ., this issue) was applied to study nutrient turnover in a revitalized section of the Thur River, North-East Switzerland. The model was first calibrated on field experimental data. The mod ...

Precipitation isotope data were used to determine the origin of groundwater in the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) in the study of Wu et al. (2017). Both precipitation and its isotope composition vary seasonally, so arithmetic averages of precipitation isotope v ...

Previous studies of hyporheic zone focused largely on the net mass transfer of solutes between stream and streambed. Solute transport within the bed has attracted less attention. In this study, we combined flume experiments and numerical simulations to exa ...

The soil water retention curve (WRC), describing the relation between the soil water content and its corresponding capillary pressure, relies not only on whether drying or wetting occurs but also on the pore scale water flow velocity. Here, we investigated ...
