Colloids moving from the stream into the hyporheic zone may have a negative impact on aquatic ecosystems as they are potential contaminants or carriers of contaminants. Moreover, retained colloids in the hyporheic zone could not only reduce the exchange fl ...

We present a software tool for simulations of flow and multi-species solute transport in two and three-dimensional domains in combination with comprehensive intra-phase and inter-phase geochemistry. The software uses IPhreeqc, the coupling version of the g ...

Sampling is a key step in the analysis of chemical compounds. It is particularly important in the environmental field, for example for wastewater effluents, wet-weather discharges or streams in which the flows and concentrations vary greatly over time. In ...

An Eulerian two-phase flow model (air-water) was used to simulate nearshore hydrodynamic processes driven by wave motion. The flow field was computed with the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with the Volume-Of-Fluid method and the ...

Wetting and drying due to tidal fluctuations affect soil conditions and hence plant growth in tidal marshes. Here, a coupled one-dimensional model was developed to simulate interacting groundwater flow and plant growth in these wetlands. The simulation res ...

Being bounded by hydrological (inflow and barrier) boundaries, natural aquifers have regular/irregular shapes. Here, we consider aquifers bounded by segmental inflow (variable head) boundaries in which water is extracted/injected by a multi-well system. St ...

The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) were used to derive formulas for determining the velocity and concentration profiles in sheet flows. Specifically, these evolutionary optimization algorithms were used in conjuncti ...

A comprehensive two-dimensional (cross-shore) process-based numerical model of nearshore hydrodynamics (based on the Navier-Stokes equations, k-ε turbulence closure and the Volume-Of-Fluid method), beach morphology, and variable-density groundwater flow (S ...

The potential of laccase-mediator systems (LMS) for the removal and detoxification of two wastewater micropollutants, the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and the herbicide isoproturon (IPN), was assessed. The influence of various parameters on micropollu ...

By implementing the moisture-based form of Richards' equation into the geochemical modelling framework PHREEQC, a generic tool for the simulation of one-dimensional flow and solute transport in the vadose zone undergoing complex geochemical reactions was d ...

A carbon solution composed of nanoparticles was used in experiments designed to explore nanoparticle transport characteristics within the hyporheic zone of a riverbed. Experiments and numerical simulations demonstrated that nanoparticle transport in the hy ...

To assist in the design of enhanced reductive dechlorination systems for in situ remediation of chlorinated solvent source zones, the software BUCHLORAC (BUffering of deCHLORination ACidity) was developed to predict the amount of buffer required to maintai ...

River restoration can enhance river dynamics, environmental heterogeneity and biodiversity, but the underlying processes governing the dynamic changes need to be understood to ensure that restoration projects meet their goals, and adverse effects are preve ...

Groundwater flow and chemical transport in subterranean estuaries are poorly understood despite their potentially important implications for chemical fluxes from aquifers to coastal waters. Here, a numerical study of the dynamics in a subterranean estuary ...

Water contamination is an important environmental concern underlining the need for reliable real-time information on contaminant concentrations in natural waters. Here, a new non-contact UV-Vis spectroscopic approach for monitoring contaminants in water, a ...

As in oceans, large-scale coherent circulations such as gyres and eddies are ubiquitous features in large lakes that are subject to the Coriolis force. They play a crucial role in the horizontal and vertical distribution of biological, chemical and physica ...

Sediment represents an important compartment in surface waters. It constitutes a habitat or spawning site for many organisms and is an essential trophic resource for higher level organisms. It can be impacted by anthropogenic activities, particularly throu ...

We report on a series of soil erosion experiments performed on the 2-m x 6-m EPFL erosion flume. Total sediment concentrations and the concentrations of seven size fractions (1000 mm) were measured during 1 ...

Hyporheic flow transports fine particles into the riverbed, which can lead to clogging of the bed and in turn affect hyporheic flow and exchange processes. Field measurements and numerical simulations show the formation of a low-permeability layer (LPL) ne ...

The direct discharge of effluent wastewater into Vidy Bay (Lake Geneva) results in the formation of an effluent plume with locally high concentrations of wastewater-derived micropollutants. The micropollutant hotspots above the wastewater outfall present a ...
