With the projected increase in world population to 9 billion by 2050, along with per capita income growth, the demand for land and water resources is going to increase significantly. Conversion of land to intensive agriculture has led to dramatic decreases ...

Nearshore hydrodynamics and sediment transport in the nearshore zone were modeled numerically taking into account turbulent unsteady flow. The flow field was computed using the Reynolds Av-eraged Navier-Stokes equations with a k-ε turbulence closure model, ...

Based on field investigations carried out in Lake Geneva during summer stratification in 2019, this study documents, for the first time, the rapid change of negatively buoyant river inflow dynamics caused by the passing of a coastal upwelling. Under calm c ...

In a recent paper by Polyakov and Nearing (2003) it was shown experimentally that the sediment transport capacity in a rill is not unique for a given soil type, slope, and flow rate. Indeed, they found that the transport capacity was dependent on whether s ...

The long-term buffering potential of three silicate minerals (diopside, fayalite and forsterite) present as fine particles in porous quartz sand medium was evaluated in flow-through column experiments over a period of 6.5 months. The columns were operated ...

The effects of apparatus-induced dispersion on nonuniform, density-dependent flow in a cylindrical soil column were investigated using a finite-element model. To validate the model, the results with an analytical solution and laboratory column test data we ...

Large amounts of toxic metals are discharged into rivers and lakes, but little is known about the factors that drive the adsorption and transformation of these metals in the hyporheic zone and the exchange flux across the sediment-water interface. To bette ...

An approximation is obtained for the recession of a sloping aquifer. The analytical approximation can provide a useful tool to analyze data and obtain physical properties of the aquifer. In contrast to the case of a horizontal aquifer, when plotting the ti ...

Aquifer-ocean temperature contrasts are common worldwide. Their effects on flow and salinity distributions in unconfined coastal aquifers are, however, poorly understood. Based on laboratory experiments and numerical simulations, we examined the responses ...

In coastal marshes, low-permeability mud is often found overlying high permeability sandy deposits. A recently developed 3D creek-marsh model was used to investigate the effects of soil stratigraphy (a mud layer overlying a sandy-loam layer) on pore-water ...

Accurate control of groundwater pH is of critical importance for in situ biological treatment of chlorinated solvents. The use of ground silicate minerals mixed with groundwater is an appealing buffering strategy as silicate minerals may act as long-term s ...

Numerical simulations were carried out to determine the residence (or flushing) time of water in Vidy Bay (north shore of Lake Geneva) for different meteorological conditions. A hydrodynamic model (Delft3DFLOW) was applied to simulate the flow field in the ...

Coastal reservoirs are a possible solution to water supply and management issues in coastal zones. However, salinization can degrade the utility of such reservoirs. Two related major challenges affecting the operation of a coastal reservoir are desalinizat ...

Wave and tide are important forcing factors that typically co-exist in coastal environments. A numerical study was conducted to investigate individual and combined effects of these forces on flow and mixing processes in a near-shore subterranean estuary. A ...

Diel Vertical Migration (DVM), a widespread zooplankton behavior in freshwater and marine systems, affects ecological interactions and biogeochemical cycles. In lakes, DVM has mainly been studied in the upper 50 m of the water column. However, based on aco ...

Parlange and Brutsaert [1987] derived a modified Boussinesq equation to account for the capillary effect on watertable dynamics in unconfined aquifers. Barry et al. [1996] solved this equation subject to a periodic boundary condition. Their solution shows ...

The effectiveness of submerged synthetic aquatic vegetation on removal of colloids from flowing water was investigated to explore retention of particulate nonpoint source pollutants in aquatic systems. In colloid transport experiments, the deposition rate ...

The scaling relation between the drainage area and stream length (Hack’s law), along with exceedance probabilities of drainage area, discharge and upstream flow network length are well known for channelized fluvial regions. We report here on a laboratory e ...

Understanding coastal plane jets which occur when a body of water discharges into an ocean or a lake through a channel or outlet is important, since they play a significant role in sediment, nutrient, and pollutant exchange. This study investigates the nea ...

A mechanistic understanding of beach environments needs to account for interactions of oceanic forcing and beach materials, in particular the role of waves on the evolution of the beach profile. A fully coupled two-phase flow model was used to simulate nea ...
