Often it is assumed that the time of perception is identical or tightly linked to the perception of time. For example, we can clearly perceive a 20 ms delay of two squares presented one after the other at nearby locations (leading to the percept of apparen ...

To understand the causes of schizophrenia, a search for stable markers (endophenotypes) is ongoing. In previous years, we have shown that the shine-through visual backward masking paradigm meets the most important characteristics of an endophenotype. Here, ...

Visual backward masking (VBM) is a very sensitive endophenotype of schizophrenia. Masking deficits are highly correlated with reduced EEG amplitudes. In VBM, a target stimulus is followed by a mask, which decreases performance on the target. Here, we inves ...

After more than a century of research, the mechanisms underlying visual masking are still hotly debated. One key characteristic of masking is that variations in the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the target and the mask can lead to either monotoni ...

Visual backward masking (VBM) is a potential endophenotype of schizophrenia reflecting the genetic underpinnings of the disease (Chkonia et al., 2010). Masking deficits are highly correlated with reduced N1 amplitudes as shown by the Global Field Power (GF ...

Vision scientists have tried to classify illusions for more than a century. For example, some studies suggested that there is a unique common factor for all visual illusions. Other studies proposed that there are several subclasses of illusions, such as il ...

Neural and perceptual responses to a visual stimulus can be suppressed by the addition of both spatially overlapping and spatially adjacent contextual stimuli. We investigated the temporal characteristics of these suppressive interactions in psychophysical ...

Background: In many countries, primary care physicians determine whether or not older drivers are fit to drive. Little, however, is known regarding the effects of cognitive decline on driving performance and the means to detect it. This study explores to w ...

In visual backward masking, a target is followed by a blank screen (ISI - Inter-stimulus-interval) and, then, a mask which deteriorates target processing. Schizophrenic patients show strong but complex processing deficits in visual masking compared to heal ...

Attention can be stimulus-driven and bottom-up or goal-driven and top-down. Bottom-up attention and, particularly, attentional capture are often thought to be strongly automatic, i.e., not modulable. For example, in visual search, it has been shown that sa ...

When a briefly presented vernier stimulus is followed by a grating consisting of 25 lines, the vernier appears brighter, longer, wider, and superimposed on the grating (shine-through). However, the vernier is largely invisible if two of the lines in the gr ...

Sensory information must be integrated over time to perceive, for example, motion and melodies. Here, to study temporal integration, we used the sequential metacontrast paradigm in which two expanding streams of lines are presented. When a line in one stre ...

Although visual integration is often thought to be retinotopic, visual features can be integrated across retinotopic locations. For example, when a Vernier is followed by a sequence of flanking lines on either side, a percept of two diverging motion stream ...

Prospective memory (PM) refers to remembering to perform intended actions in the future. Older adults in particular have been shown to be negatively affected by PM tasks that require a high amount of attentional resources (i.e., nonfocal tasks). This age-r ...

In crowding, neighbouring elements impair the perception of a target. Crowding is often considered a consequence of spatial pooling of visual information. We investigated the role of configural effects in crowding by manipulating the global stimulus config ...

In tennis, as in many disciplines of sport, fine spatio-temporal resolution is required to reach optimal performance. While many studies on tennis have focused on anticipatory skills or decision making, fewer have investigated the underlying visual percept ...

In consciousness research, we have a very large number of theories, which exceeds by far the number of theories in other fields. We recently presented a set of criteria for evaluating and comparing theories of consciousness, and then applied the criteria t ...

Introduction Recent work has shown an association between cognitive and visual impairments and two main theories were advanced, namely the sensory deprivation and the common cause theories. Most studies considered only basic visual functions such as visual ...

In the past 10 years, our laboratory has proved the shine-through paradigm to be a very sensitive endophenotype for schizophrenia. The shine-through paradigm is a visual backward masking task, where the target is a vertical vernier followed by a 25-element ...

The visual cortex exhibits functional specialization that can be routinely demonstrated using hemodynamic measures like fMRI and PET. To understand the dynamic nature of cortical processes, however, source imaging with a high temporal resolution is necessa ...
