An implicit or explicit assumption in most vision research is that there exist objects in the external world, and that we typically perceive them as they are. Illusions and other misperceptions are rare failures of veridical perception. Philosophers have q ...

In human vision, the optics of the eye map neighboring points of the environment onto neighboring photoreceptors in the retina. This retinotopic encoding principle is preserved in the early visual areas. Under normal viewing conditions, due to the motion o ...

Performance usually improves when observers train with one type of a visual stimulus. Roving denotes the situation when, instead of one, two or more types of stimuli are presented randomly interleaved (one per trial). For some stimulus types, performance i ...

Attention is crucial for visual perception because it allows the visual system to effectively use its limited resources by selecting behaviorally and cognitively relevant stimuli from the large amount of information impinging on the eyes. Reflexive, stimul ...

Social interactions are fundamental to human life, with social dominance being a key factor in these interactions. Previous studies have shown that dominant males are faster in decision-making tasks compared to non-dominant ones, even in the absence of a s ...

When objects move in the environment, their retinal images can undergo drastic changes and features of different objects can be inter-mixed in the retinal image. Notwithstanding these changes and ambiguities, the visual system is capable of establishing co ...

Intuitively, consciousness seems to be a continuous stream of percepts. Here, contrary to intuition, we show evidence for discrete consciousness, occurring only at certain moments of time. We presented a Vernier followed by a sequence of flanking lines on ...

The first stage of the Atkinson–Shiffrin model of human memory is a sensory memory (SM). The visual component of the SM was shown to operate within a retinotopic reference frame. However, a retinotopic SM (rSM) is unable to account for vision under natural ...

In crowding, target perception is deteriorated by flanking elements. For example, when a vernier is flanked by two lines of the same length, vernier offset discrimination strongly deteriorates. Interestingly, changing the color of the flankers can reduce c ...

We investigated Gestalt perception in the intact visual field (VF) of hemianopia patients. Three patients and matched controls performed a Yes-No figure detection task. Gabor patches of one orientation, making up the outline of a square, were embedded in r ...

Training with one type of a visual stimulus usually improves performance. When observers train with two or more stimulus types presented in random order (so-called roving), performance improves for certain stimulus types but not for others. To understand w ...

Visual crowding is the inability to perceive elements within clutter. Traditional crowding models, such as pooling, predict that performance deteriorates when flankers are added. However, this prediction has been disproved. For example, performance was fou ...

Flexural and torsional rigidity are important properties of skis. However, the flexural and torsional rigidity that lead to optimal performance remain to be established. In the present study, four pairs of slalom skis that differed in flexural and torsiona ...

In crowding,1-7 objects that can be easily recognized in isolation appear jumbled when surrounded by other elements.8 Traditionally, crowding is explained by local pooling mechanisms,3,6,9-15 but many findings have shown that the global configuration of th ...

Understanding the dynamics of how separate features combine to form holistic object representations is a central problem in visual cognition. Feature attribution (also known as feature transposition and feature inheritance) refers to the later of two stimu ...

Visual backward masking (BM) deficits are often proposed to be trait markers for schizophrenia revealing the genetic underpinnings of the disease. Here, we show that, indeed, masking deficits in the shine-through effect are associated with polymorphisms in ...

Aims/Purpose: Cataract, i.e., an opacification of the natural intraocular lens, is one of the leading causes of visual impairments worldwide. Cataract surgery, which involves the removal of the opaque lens and implantation of an artificial intraocular lens ...

Gruber et al. (2022) offered a framework how to explain "Physical time within human time", solving the 'two times problem: Here, I am asking whether such a problem exists at all. To question the question, I will appeal to neurobiological, evolutionary, and ...

The spatial representation of a visual scene in the early visual system is well known. The optics of the eye map the three-dimensional environment onto two-dimensional images on the retina. These retinotopic representations are preserved in the early visua ...

Classic reinforcement learning (RL) theories cannot explain human behavior in the absence of external reward or when the environment changes. Here, we employ a deep sequential decision-making paradigm with sparse reward and abrupt environmental changes. To ...
