Many visual attributes of a target stimulus are computed according to dynamic, non-retinotopic reference frames. For example, the motion trajectory of a reflector on a bicycle wheel is perceived as orbital, even though it is in fact cycloidal in retinal, a ...

Distributed EEG source imaging can reveal the electrical activity underlying visual perception in both cortical and deeper sources. How well electrical source imaging localizes functionally specialized visual areas, such as V1 and MT, has so far not been d ...

In classical models of object recognition, first, basic features (e.g., edges and lines) are analyzed by independent filters that mimic the receptive field profiles of V1 neurons. In a feedforward fashion, the outputs of these filters are fed to filters at ...

The Neurorobotics Platform of the Human Brain Project hosts many different large-scale models that can easily be connected with each other. Here, we linked a deep neural network for saliency computation to a spiking cortical model for visual segmentation ( ...

Organisms use rewards to navigate and adapt to (uncertain) environments. Error-based learning about rewards issupported by the dopaminergic system, which is thought to signal reward prediction errors to make adjustmentsto past predictions. More recently, t ...

Flankers can strongly deteriorate performance on a visual target (crowding). For example, vernier offset discrimination is strongly affected by neighboring flankers. Interestingly, performance for longer and shorter flankers is better than performance for ...

Perception depends on reference frames. For example, the "true'' cycloidal motion trajectory of a reflector on a bike's wheel is invisible because we perceive the reflector motion relative to the bike's motion trajectory, which serves as a reference frame. ...

Classically, stimuli are rendered unconscious by backward masking or binocular rivalry, where it is usually assumed that the mask or the stimulus in the contralateral eye suppress the target. Based, on the Ternus-Pikler display (http://lpsy.epfl.ch/researc ...

In crowding, perception of a target is strongly deteriorated by nearby elements. Crowding is often explained by pooling models predicting that adding flankers increases crowding. In contrast, the centroid hypothesis proposes that adding flankers decreases ...

In visual crowding, target discrimination strongly deteriorates when flanking elements are added. We have recently shown that crowding cannot be explained by simple low-level interactions and that grouping is a key component instead. We presented a vernier ...

Alcohol is one of the most commonly consumed drugs in the world. While the effects of alcohol on cognitive and psychomotor skills have been well studied, little research has examined alcohol's effects on visual processing. In the present study, we evaluate ...

Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder determined by a complex mixture of genetic and environmental factors. To better understand the contributions of human genetic variations to schizophrenia, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of ...

Visual backward masking (VBM) is strongly deteriorated in schizophrenia patients. VBM is a potential endophenotype of schizophrenia reflecting the genetic underpinnings of the disease (Chkonia et al., 2010). Masking deficits are highly correlated with redu ...

In cognition, audition, and somatosensation, performance strongly correlates between different paradigms, which suggests the existence of common factors. In contrast, visual performance in seemingly very similar tasks, such as visual and bisection acuity, ...

Memory is an essential component of cognition and disorders of memory have significant individual and societal costs. The Atkinson-Shiffrin "modal model" forms the foundation of our understanding of human memory. It consists of three stores: Sensory Memory ...

When two visual stimuli are presented in rapid succession only one fused image is perceived. For example, a red disk followed by a green disk is perceived as a single yellow disk (e.g., Efron, Perc Psychophys, 1973). For two verniers that last 30ms each, i ...

In chess, a series of moves is made until a delayed sparse feedback (win, loss) is issued, which makes it impossible to evaluate the value of a single move. There are powerful reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms, which can cope with these sequential dec ...

We investigated perceptual learning in self-motion perception. Blindfolded participants were displaced leftward or rightward by means of a motion platform and asked to indicate the direction of motion. A total of eleven participants underwent 3,360 practic ...

In patients with schizophrenia, early as well as late stages of information processing can be deficient. Therefore, it is important to determine the earliest occurrences of aberrant processing since deficits on these stages may cause abnormal processing on ...

The development of visual functions is very diverse. Some visual functions mature within the first year of life, whereas maturation for other functions extends into adolescence. The reasons for these developmental differences are largely unknown. Here, we ...
